First world problem of the day: when you have something to do later on, so you try to think of ways to pass the time between now and then, but end up screwing around doing nothing until you run out of time to do anything. Great job, self.

So! Before White Collar comes on (jeez, I didn't even bother watching last week's episode, here's hoping the Previously On is extra informative), I'll do another one of these!

12 – Have you ever attempted an 'adaptation' fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom? )

Well, that almost killed half an hour. *wanders off to check Tumblr again*
lotus0kid: (city)
I'm off on a New York visit with [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket on Thursday, but I won't be super available on Wednesday, so let's have one of these for the road!

11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most? )

Anywho, d'awww, White Collar, I almost thought there wouldn't be a lovely Peter/Neal hug upon their reunion. Silly me.
lotus0kid: (verbs or adjectives)
Other things that get to happen now that I can see:
1. I'm getting a haircut on Saturday, and now I can actually watch it happen! You natural seers don't know- used to be I had my glasses off for the duration of every haircut, which meant all I saw was a me-colored blob and I could only sit there hoping everything was going okay until it was done. So, no more of that nonsense! Not that I expect the experience to be anything revelatory, but still.
2. Once RenFest comes around again, I'm gonna buy me a mask. One of those fancy leather ones that look like a leaf or something, I'm not sure yet. Masks have not been part of my life in any meaningful way so far. I remember one Halloween trying to wear a mask as part of a skeleton costume... I doubt it stayed on over the glasses for more than half an hour. But now? Bring 'em on!

Okay, enough extolling the glory of 20/20 vision. Been a bit since I did one of these! 10 - Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could? )

You know, I keep thinking about those meme fics I used to do... turns out I haven't done one since freaking 2010! And I had such fun with them! Seriously, some of my favorite pieces are little <1000-words meme fics. So, if anyone out there is interested, if you've been playing along the last little while you have a very good idea what fandoms are available...

Give me (at least) two characters from different fandoms that you know I'm familiar with and I'll give you a dialogue happening between the two of them. Without justifying how the crossover would work, how their worlds clashed, or how they could even meet each other. Just a silly crossover conversation with no backstory, for fun.
lotus0kid: (belle&rumpelstiltskin)
Yesss, new Rifftrax Live. In August. And it's Manos: the Hands of Fate. I've never worked up the nerve to watch that one, though I faintly recall seeing a bit of it on TV waaay back when. It honestly freaked me out, but then I probably had no idea what the context was. I found Crow's silhouette somewhat creepy back then too. Sorry, Crow.

In other news, Rumbelle tea is as tasty as it is dorky. Those berry flavors are off the charts. There was like a whole dried strawberry in my last cup! Brew for two and half minutes and enjoy.

PICTURE, because like all of my generation I feel the urgent need to document my life )

So, it's looking highly likely that I'm going to get my vision corrected next Thursday. I'd like to be more excited about it, but I read the laundry list of possible screw-ups that could happen, and it keeps cutting in whenever I think about it. Whatever. I really, really don't want to be functionally blind anymore, I have the means to do it, the place I'm going to has done the procedure hundreds of thousands of times, so there. I've worn glasses since I was seven years old- I can't really wrap my head around the idea of just seeing without them. Still, I'm looking forward to it. This coming up Sunday I think I'll go shopping for my first pair of non-prescription sunglasses. After I go to the pharmacy and get the eyedrops I'm supposed to use so my eyes don't die.

Meme time! 9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write? )
lotus0kid: (5 seconds)
Eee, one of my old professors was on Jackie Kashian's podcast The Dork Forest! That guy's great- I love that he's almost getting sorta famous with his Tolkien podcast. I'm holding out hope the rumors of him being interviewed on The Colbert Report end up being true. I might actually start listening to his podcast myself, once I finish The Hobbit. Slow going right now, as with everything I read. We've made it to the foot of the Lonely Mountain, though! According to this Dork Forest episode, some serious shit has yet to go down. I'm nervous.

Dark Shadows was meh. Up next on my Summer O' Movie-Watchin' is Moonrise Kingdom (which I'm psyched for) and Men in Black III (DON'T JUDGE ME- the second one is crap but the first one is important to me, also the previews have looked good). They'll both probably have to wait though, since I'll be down the beach for the long weekend. Might have to make some more weekday treks to the theater. Because I am an adult.

The post OUaT dry spell is over.. ish. I tried doing a post-finale fix-it reaction kind of thing, but it's mostly stalled now. I might just scribble out the bit I really wanted to as a drabble and stick it on Tumblr. As for the other fic (sequel to As Easy As to Know, for the three people who care and aren't reading this), I'm having plot issues. There are two things I want to do, mostly because they'll be amusing, and I'm not 100% sure I can do them both. One thing kind of depends on just how long of a long game Gold's been playing this whole time. And indeed, in canon it has been very long. The other thing involves research. *shudder*

In conclusion, the next one of these: 8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs. )
lotus0kid: (have a nice day)
Working on my trifecta of chores today. Laundry's done, cleaning's done, cooking... could go either way at this point. We'll see. It's looking like it might rain, and I have to do a quick Safeway run if I'm going to cook...

Had my younger brother's college graduation dinner last night, which was nice. I tried roasted bone marrow! I was looking at the restaurant's menu online the day before and I saw a dish that came with bone marrow and I thought, "Well, Anthony Bourdain seems to like it, I wanna take a shot!" Here's what it looked like, just like on TV: )

It was.. okay I guess. There really wasn't much to it, maybe a spoonful, the spoon being super tiny. I kept poking at bits of it, trying to see if any more was edible. It tasted mostly like the fat on a steak, but a little different. Overall, I probably won't go out of my way for it again.

Otherwise, let's see... The Avengers, aw yeah. Basically everything a dork like me could ask for, plus a surprise Tony/Bruce bonus. Those two... I got serious feels for them, you guys. Did not expect that. I mean, just look, and look, and look. I feel guilty, because Pepper's awesome and she's adorable with Tony, but...

I'm nervous about the OUaT finale. Please don't suck, show. You can... yes, okay, yes, you can Joss all my fic that is, was, or ever could be. Just don't suck while you do it, all right?

In conclusion, I totally meant to go see Dark Shadows this weekend. Oops. Maybe I'll go Wednesday. Wednesday's a nice day to do fun stuff- it really livens up the week.

Oh! The fic-writing meme! Almost forgot. Okay, we have got: 7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character? )

ETA: ALERT ALERT ALERT! NEXT YEAR'S DISCWORLD CONVENTION IS IN BALTIMORE. KJDFHAJSD;KHFA;LKJFFJGKA

New tea!

Apr. 26th, 2012 06:48 pm
lotus0kid: (Default)
Aww yeah, green tea, cherry flavor. Well, y'know, cherry plus stuff to make it sound classy. It's actually called Cherry Moon, which is nice and evocative. And I got this other kind, called Chanticleer Breakfast Tea, which basically seems to be tea-flavored tea. I appreciate that. I had a cup this morning and it was very pleasant. Eastern Shore Tea Company- look 'em up. Really nice teas, never bitter, always tasty, you can order online and get your tea in a few days. I also recommend Baltimore Clipper Ship Tea, Black Raven Tea, and (if you can find it) Chestertown Tea. Tea doesn't look like a word anymore.

So, I'm going to the eye doctor tomorrow, because it's been quite a while since my last check-up, and also because I'm seriously thinking about getting my vision corrected. With a laser. I think eighteen years is long enough dealing with my piss-poor vision. If the doctor says it's okay, I'm probably going to go for it.

On the movie front- because I really talk about movies a lot, don't I, oh well- I'm going to be carving out some time for There Will Be Blood. That's a movie I'm watching more just to have watched it than because I really want to. And these days I have a fondness for Paul F. Tompkins, so I was more motivated to move it along in the queue than I might have been. Also, I can't decide if I want to see Cabin in the Woods and/or The Pirates! Band of Misfits, or let them wait for DVD. I could kind of use a stay-around-the-house weekend- do some cleaning, do some writing. It's been a while since I really cooked anything. It would be nice. Weather's supposed to suck anyway. Hm.

And finally, another one of these! 6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters? )
lotus0kid: (creative process)
Hm, my water appears to be shut off. Wish I'd noticed that before I went to the bathroom. *feels unclean* ETA: Neighbor says the laundry room flooded. Lovely.

Anyway, not much else to report today. I'm behind on The Daily Show and Grimm, so, I'm gonna fix that. I'm finally going to watch Ed Wood, which Netflix sent. Yup. Totally going to do those things. And not work on my new fic idea (yes, another). Even though I'm kind of enamored with it and what I really want to do is dive into it just to get the stuff out of my head before I forget it. Curse my inability to write scenes out of order. I've been useless at work- I recently downloaded this game that drains my battery like a starving vampire but it's fabulous for giving me something mindless to do so I can think. I hit the button that fires it up and BAM, I'm wandering off in my own little world. Which is a pretty fun place to be when I'm working through the details of a new plot. Anyway, it's called Dubble and it's your basic upside-down Tetris thing where you shoot these blobby little balls at a descending curtain of more balls and if you get at least three of the same color to touch they burst and you get points. Not having ever seen anyone else play Dubble, I'm pretty sure I'm amazing at it.

So, you know what I noticed? On that fic-writing 30-day meme thing, I'm missing day four and I have no idea how to find it. Uh, whoops. As such, on to day five! 5 -If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your 'muse' or not, what did you do about it? )
lotus0kid: (Default)
Going to see The Hunger Games in a bit. I'm really not particularly interested in reading the books, but I've heard very good things about this movie, so I'm checking it out. Also, as some review or other said, the subject matter is so much about the visual that I think a movie might be the best format for it.

Aside from that it's important for me to see it because, well, I'm falling behind in watching the Swindon Town Swoodilypoopers. Not sure I mentioned them, but a little while ago I started watching John Green play FIFA 11 on YouTube and am now a fervent supporter of the Swindon Town Swoodilypoopers. This is probably the closest I've ever come to being a fan of a sport-type thing, which says a very great deal about how entertaining the Swoodilypoopers are under the management of John Green. Anyway, a couple of vids ago he talked about The Hunger Games and thankfully warned for spoilers, so once I've watched the thing, I can catch up on my Swoodilypoopers in their quest for virtual glory.

So, that's my afternoon. My morning was getting my taxes done, which is always nerve-wracking because what I don't know about taxes is pretty much everything there is to know about taxes. Whatever, it's done now.

Hey, let's do another one of these!

3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write? )

P.S. I'm kind of in a horror mood ATM. I blame whoever put Masters of Horror and Mark Gatiss' A History of Horror on YouTube. As such, I'm breaking my new toys. SEND HELP. (*begs muse* please don't let this be multi-chapter, please don't let this be multi-chapter...)
lotus0kid: (friends & wonders)
Good evening! I had an interesting day today. Spent it with some friendly young strangers in DC. Well, I say strangers- a stranger is never really a stranger if they're also a nerdfighter. Anyway, we ate pizza, saw a lovely congregation of kites on the Mall, and took in a suprasensorial experience at the Hirshhorn. Check out some of my kite pictures!

Pretty huge, but worth it. )

So that was neat. I also posted a little Rumbelle thing on Tumblr where basically Belle is Regina's croney and has no memories of life before Storybrooke. Or does she? *dundundunn*

Otherwise, I think I'll watch me some Blazing Saddles tonight. And, what the hey, let's have another fic-writing question.

2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it. )
lotus0kid: (verbs or adjectives)
Ohhh, sweet jeepers, so numb. SO NUMB. I can feel it in my SCALP! But the last of the cavities is gone, and I don't have to go back until August. Which is fabulous. So, a meme! Sure! Maybe it'll finally kick me past this non-existent snag I'm in. From [livejournal.com profile] guanin:

1. Go to page 77 (or 7) of your current manuscript.
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines – sentences or paragraphs – and post them as they’re written.
4. Encourage other people to do it!

... Or wait, actually no. Heh, I would if I could, but the thing I'm working on is only six pages so far, not seven. I maybe should've checked that before I got this all set up. I'm shocked- it felt a lot longer than six pages. Nuts.

So, okay, looking through my stockpile of memes (what, you don't have one?)... Hm, there's this 30-question meme based on fic-writing. It always seemed a bit too navel-gazey, but since we're on the subject...

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in? )
lotus0kid: (rawk)
Looks like we've got a nice bit of snow going tonight. About time, right, my fellow Mid-Atlanticers? Anyway, I could be reading fic now, or writing it, or watching more Vlogbrothers vids (it's really awful how each one is usually no more than four minutes- keeps making you think you have time for "just one more"... until you don't). But instead, I want to try a meme I just invented! Hm, is it really a meme if you're the first to do it? I feel like the definition of a meme would have to include some kind of lifespan greater than.. right now. Anyway, it's kind of a combination of that one where you use your music library to write a poem by taking the first lines of thirteen songs that come up on shuffle, and the one where you write down the first song that comes up for certain words when you type them into the search bar. I'm going to take a few words from that list, and write a poem using the first lines of all the tracks that come up when I type each word into the search bar. Get it? Sure you do! So here we go!

Okay, first problem: it's tough to pick words that don't come up with, like, 60+ songs... )

I'd say that worked out pretty well, though I might add a proviso like.. only use the songs that have the particular word in the title. I got screwed by a lot of album names in there. And it gets tricky when you want to be true to the lines that come up, but you'd also like the poem to make sense. I've compromised by fiddling with the order the songs came in and the punctuation, while refusing to change any words or delete lines that are awkward. And now it seems to have mostly stopped snowing. Boo-urns, says my inner child.
lotus0kid: (have a nice day)
*desperately trying to think of something to do that isn't grocery shopping or cleaning or writing* Ah HA, I have it! [livejournal.com profile] fannish5!

5 greatest (or favorite) examples of breaking the fourth wall, or canon material going meta.

Piss on you, I'm workin' for Mel Brooks! )
lotus0kid: (cool cool cool)
Well, looks like yet another show I love is doomed to die. But, maybe, just maybe, given the small but wildly enthusiastic fanbase and all, things could improve. I'm thinking they might. I've seen a few petitions floating around, and you can always go to NBC's website and tell them how much you like the show and want it to stick around. Also, Tumblr's got a neat comm going where folks can submit photos of "Save Community" signs with/without themselves holding them. This one's mine. (I'm really glad I went with pen instead of sharpie, which was my first impulse.)

Otherwise, I've got one more quiet weekend ahead of me before I barrel into Thanksgiving. I'll be going down the ocean Thursday morning, and staying until Sunday, when I will be taken to a mysterious event I know almost nothing about...

Argh, I need to cook dinner, I need to wash that pot, I need to watch that hour-long panel Neil Gaiman posted, I need to watch Life in a Day on Netflix. But... but... I wanna do this meme! I haven't done it since 2009, which is ridiculous! So, whatever, let me just hurry up and get it done. You know, before Congress passes that law and the Great Firewall (US) goes up.

List seven songs that you are currently loving. It doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions, the artists, and the songs in your blog.

I think the world could use a clear connection )
lotus0kid: (rawk)
It's been aaages since I did a proper meme! What's wrong with me? I used to do those all the time! Anyway, taken most recently (and it was a close race) from [livejournal.com profile] c_quinn:

Type these words into your music library and name the first song that appears:

Love:
Hate:
Light:
Dark:
Happy:
Sad:
Good:
Bad:
Smile:
Cry:
Girl:
Boy:

Quite the spectrum under here... )
lotus0kid: (cool cool cool)
Dangit, I want to go to bed at ten like a good girl, but things keep being on! Monday it was Alphas (still deciding on that one), Tuesday it was Cover Affairs (meh), and today I discovered Deadliest Warrior's new season is premiering. Come on, Washington vs. Bonaparte! You know you want to find out who would win that fight. And hey, on the credits sequence, I think I spotted a real live lady! Wooo! Never seen one of them on this show!

Anyway, how about a nice traditional meme:

Give me a pairing and I'll tell you:

1. When or if I started shipping them:
2. What I think their challenge is:
3. What makes me happy about them:
4. What makes me sad about them:
5. What moment I wish had never happened:
6. Who I'd be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
7. My happily ever after for them:

ETA: Double dangit! US Top Gear premieres at ten next Sunday. Noooo! And yaaay!
lotus0kid: (city)
Got deeply bored at work today. So I accidentally drew Cthulu. )

Meanwhile, I wanted to try this out- remember that Fandom-as-an-Ex meme from aaaages ago? I am going to attempt it again, but this time, with music. Let's see how this works...

Things I Learned: this meme is kind of awkward when you're potentially referring to actual people, as opposed to fandoms, even when you're really just talking about their work. )

Lastly, I have received and listened to The Real Tuesday Weld's new album. Still collecting my thoughts on it, I need to give it a few more tries before I have a solid opinion. I can say that there are a couple tracks I'm 90% sure I can do without, as well as a couple tracks I'm 100% sure I can't do without.

ETA: I wish I knew how to quit you, Netflix. No, really, I wish I did. Slapping us all with a huge price increase for the same damn service is a straight-up no-frills dick move. *sigh* ... *trudges off to watch Let Me In on Instant*
lotus0kid: (dreamer)
Okay, I really tried to make a poster, but I got bored/annoyed with Photoshop and quit. On the plus side, I think I've figured out how to crop objects/people out of pictures. And there was something else, a button I found that will be useful. Can't remember what it did now. Dang. I'm always like that with Photoshop- I do something, and then I can't remember how I did it. I want to be like the cool kids and make awesome icons and fanmix covers, but I've got some kind of weird Photoshop learning disorder or something. It's annoying.

*sigh* Anyway, here you go [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket. I present to you the synopsis of Cackle Bladder (Revisited):

LOL, thanks, iTunes Shuffle )

Ahh. Now that meme's done, let's have another! From [livejournal.com profile] zombres:

+ Pick one of my icons.
+ I will (try my best to) write you at least one sentence of something vaguely resembling fiction based on said icon.
lotus0kid: (only love)
Ye-eah, I was gonna get up all nice and early, take my shower, zip on down and get my car serviced all before noon today, but.. ah... meh. I missed out on my lazy Saturday morning last weekend, no one was taking another from me. Anyway the whole point of going to the car place early is so you don't have to wait as long, but I've got a book, I've got a smart phone (smartphone?). Hanging out waiting somewhere is really no great trial when you have either of those things. Unless you need to be somewhere else, then you're in trouble. So I'll keep taking it slow for the next hour or two. Deadliest Warrior is on Netflix, so that'll keep me occupied. Why do I like that show? I really couldn't say...

Also, heard the fantastic news out of New York. See my icon? It's only a matter of time before the rest of the country, and hopefully the world, figures that out.

This is not a very interesting post. Ummm...

1) Get people to give you suggestions for actors to put together in a movie.
2) Put your music player on shuffle & find a song
3) Make a poster
(I make no promises on this.)
4) Write a synopsis
lotus0kid: (only love)
Got a very cool [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 meme on Friday:

Five favorite beta or ambiguously canon relationships (link goes to TVtropes)

I love beta couples! Honestly, I tend to find them more interesting than the main couples, maybe because the characters aren't as fully developed (because character development can sometimes mean draping him/her/them in cliches).

Only trouble is I just know there are dozens I'm forgetting. Anyway, some spoilers. )

*sigh* If I'm smart, I will clean today. Like a real clean, not just vacuuming the kitchen and wiping down the trouble spots in the bathroom. Come on, self, you can listen to music while you do it, it'll be nice.
