Ah, well, had a great time down at the gay rights rally in DC. It was muggy and humid as hell, but it didn't rain, and since we were standing in an open area for about three hours, I was actually happy for the clouds because straight sunshine would've been brutal. It wasn't a huge event, but there were a lot of really great speakers and it's always nice to see people supporting a more than worthy cause. I made a sign to wave around, based on an icon I saw on some post or another:

I've got some stuff to do tomorrow morning. The unemployment people are going to be calling at 7:30am- on my cell phone, which means I'm going to have to haul ass out to somewhere where I can get a signal if I want the call to last more than two seconds before it's dropped. And I do need to talk to those people, because at 9:30am I have a meeting with somebody at my dad's company about a job. *sigh* I know I need the paycheck, but I.. I've always felt like working for my dad is the easiest way out. I wanted to find my own job, not depend on him, even if I would be earning every cent. Oh well. Hopefully I wouldn't have to be there long anyway, depending on how this grad school business turns out.
Anyway, other things. Saw Scott Pilgrim, which was.. a visual spectacle, if nothing else. I dunno, it was fun to watch for sure, and definitely funny more often than not, but the main plot (Scott Pilgrim does videogame-style battle with his dreamgirl Ramona Flowers' seven evil exes) kind of hit my oft-ignored feminist button. I mean, dear lord, Ramona, what on Earth is stopping you from defeating your evil exes yourself? Who made that rule? She helps out all of twice, but those two times clearly showed she has just as much ability to kick righteous ass as Scott. Meh, I guess if I'm going to get my Edgar Wright fix, I'll stick to Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead (cannot wait for the last of the Cornetto trilogy to come out XDDD).
I've had more luck with Netflix stuff. Lo is a strange movie I found on the Instant Watch list. The basic plot is a demon kindaps the girlfriend (April) of this guy (Justin), and the movie's about him trying to get her back. It's a low-budget movie, pretty obviously since Justin spends almost the entire time sitting in a magic circle he drew on the floor to summon another demon, the eponymous Lo. All around them is entirely black, except for certain parts that involve flashbacks (done in the form of theatrical scenes- as in, stage and curtains and everything) or the appearance of other demons/cursed souls/etc. I think the movie was mainly made as scary monster make-up practice for the producer Tom Devlin, but that's not a bad thing- all the demons look great, Lo is foul-mouthed and frequently hilarious, and ultimately you come to really feel for Justin and April. Also, the soundtrack is kind of amazing, the love theme especially.
Secretary is.. something, that's for sure. I enjoyed it a lot, and I think it's important for people to watch, because it shows something people might write off as abnormal and alien instead as a perfectly valid and fulfilling lifestyle. It's wonderfully romantic, and sexy, and colorful, and all the actors do an awesome job. The only thing that put me off a little didn't actually have anything to do with the movie itself, but Netflix's description of it. I've sent it back (reluctantly), but from what I remember, it mentions Lee(Maggie Gyllenhaal)'s self-hatred and Edward(James Spader)'s egomania as the reason they form this relationship. I honestly think that's kind of ridiculous- I never felt self-hatred from Lee. Certainly sorrow and helplessness that she couldn't do anything to fix her family problems, but if anyone hated themselves it was Edward, he was no egomaniac. He's clearly disturbed by his dominant tendencies, and he tries as hard as he can to keep control of himself. He needs Lee to finally accept that part of himself as healthy, if not exactly mainstream. So, bad form, Netflix.
After the movie I came home and attempted to make a coconut stir-fry with shrimp and egg noodles. It.. could've gone worse. I couldn't find any green chilis at the grocery store, the cooked shrimp I bought weren't peeled, I forgot the cilantro, and they really should've warned how gooey coconut milk gets when you boil noodles in it (like a really thick cheese sauce, I swear!). But, actually, I just ate a bowl of the leftovers and.. maybe it's because I hadn't eaten anything but a snow cone since 11am... but it was highly tolerable. The coconut taste is very light, and the shrimp adds a little saltiness, and every now and then you pick up on the ginger/garlic/scallions in a nice way. Preparation still needs fine-tuning, and I'd like to remember the cilantro next time, but overall not bad.
Also, one of those fic-praise memes, yeah.Validate me?

Date: 2010-08-16 12:40 am (UTC)7:30 am is too early to be having important phone calls. I don't think I can even form sentences that early.
I just read this review about Scott Pilgrim and I think it kind of validated the feeling the trailer gave me. So I probably will not be watching it. I may, however, be watching Hot Fuzz tonight, as I just bought it yesterday.
I've heard good things about Secretary, but never actually pursued seeing it. Maybe I'll give it a shot one of these days, it seems interesting.
Man, we should've had lunch or something. I just heated up a healthy choice sandwich thing which was also mostly tolerable.
Oh, that meme is going to cause me angst. How will I pick a favorite?!
Also I love your current music choice ;)

Date: 2010-08-16 12:54 am (UTC)Believe it or not, no! Convenient indeed.

Wooo! Go watch it! It's fantastic! Anywho, yeah, that review is pretty on the money. I didn't find Scott Pilgrim insufferable, but he's definitely the low self-esteem loser, when he's not kicking one of the exes asses.
I've heard good things about Secretary, but never actually pursued seeing it.
It's definitely worth a look. BDSM isn't for everyone of course, but this is still a sensitive and heartfelt look at that kind of relationship.
Oh, that meme is going to cause me angst. How will I pick a favorite?!
Oh p'shaw, don't worry about it.
Also I love your current music choice ;)
Heh, right? It was actually the first song I listened to this morning on the way to the metro, no joke.

Date: 2010-08-16 12:58 am (UTC)From the trailers I think his manner of speaking would annoy me after an hour. Which is weird, because I do like Michael Cera, he just keeps playing characters that I am predisposed to not like.
Yeah, I think it's one of the few films from that perspective out there, definitely one of the only ones that's in anyway mainstream. Probably worth a look just for that.
*laughs* I'm scrolling through your fic tag just to make sure there isn't any I've forgotten.
Hah! Yeah, it's a great song, that is now and forever associated with Watchmen for me.

Date: 2010-08-16 01:04 am (UTC)Hm, well, I guess all I can say is it didn't bother me. He's got some pretty funny lines, actually, every now and then.
Exactly, like I said, I think it's really important to have movies like this that take something that's considered weird and icky and show it to be neither of those things.
'Kay. ^^
I only see that as a positive. :D

I haven't seen any of those movies yet so I can't comment. I do want to see Scott Pilgrim but it's not at the top of my movie going list right now.
That shrimp sounds good.

Date: 2010-08-16 12:57 am (UTC)I know, right? It better not take too long because I'm going to have to run back to the house and shower and change for the 9:30 meeting, and then if that doesn't take too long, zip over for yoga at 10:45. Yeesh.
Scott Pilgrim is fun- better if you basically treat it as a two-hour fireworks show.
It was pretty good, I'd say, not a bad effort.

Date: 2010-08-16 01:37 am (UTC)I want to see Winter's Bone, so I think if I make a movie outing it will be for that.
Better than my dinner. *laughs* I had potato pancakes and a salad. But it was a really good salad.

Ooh, I could go for potato pancakes.

Date: 2010-08-16 01:45 am (UTC)It's about this 17-year old girl whose father is a meth maker/dealer. He jumps bail, and she has to track him down since he put the family home up as bond.
They were satisfying.

I enjoyed the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, so I'm looking forward to the movie. The books are entertaining and funny. Scott is annoying, but it's usually played for laughs so I don't mind too much.

Date: 2010-08-18 02:37 pm (UTC)Yeah. They did finally agree that I could receive some money from them, but of course, now I don't need it, because I start in my dad's HR department on Monday.
Hm, I am tempted to read the novels. I could download them from a friend. I might.
