I love those doppler radar images you see on the weather report of storms coming up from the south, it looks like an enormous green amoeba is about to engulf the east coast. Look out!

That's pretty much the only good thing about the apparently horrendous snow storm breathing down Maryland's neck. I was really super going to go Christmas shopping on Saturday- now it'll have to wait until probably Tuesday after work (can't miss Monday's re-watch, of course). And then there's the appointment I made to get a photo portrait done for my dad's gift. I've already had to reschedule it for Saturday because my mom's dragging me out to the BSO on Sunday... Though, I wonder if the storm's put that in jeopardy too. Oy. Snow? Seriously, crappy timing.

Anyway, other stuff. TV! I finally sat down and watched two of the recent Doctor Who specials, "The New Doctor" and "Planet of the Dead." You know, I hate to say it, but I may be pretty much done with Doctor Who. Those two episodes were okay, but they really didn't thrill me like earlier ones have, and ending each one with "THE DOCTOR IS SOOOOOOOOOO LONELYYYYYYY! DDDX" got old really fast. So, you know, I'm interested enough to check out the first of Eleven's episodes, and whatever episode it is with John Simm and Timothy Dalton, but if they don't get the job done, that'll be about it for me.

OTOH, Syfy's Alice was really something special, I think. Surreal but still grounded, well-acted and nicely textured and cinematic. Hatter's awesome, as is Charlie, and Alice herself, though sometimes you could pick up on Catarina Scorsone's inexperience. I love that she's a black belt, but they didn't have her doing all kinds of ridiculous martial arts moves at every opportunity. Honestly, 90% of the time the moves she did seemed very realistic for someone who, despite having the knowledge, gained that knowledge in a classroom and not while actually protecting themselves from harm. So, points for that. And Alice/Hatter is adorable, there I said it.

I'm really interested in seeing the new Alice from Sci-Fi (I stubbornly refuse to spell it the new way). I'm such a big fan of that story, and I like creative, surreal adaptations. Just another thing to add to my ever-growing Netflix list.

As for Doctor Who, I still have yet to see "The Water of Mars"- I was going to watch it while someone had it uploaded to youtube, but it got taken down before I got the chance. And with the new one coming up, I really need to get on that!

It's definitely worth checking out. They do a good job making a tangible world out of the goofiness of canon.

Well, if you get BBC America wherever you are, it's coming on at I think 9pm tonight.

I very much agree. :)

I couldn't help it. I saw the show and went, "Hee. Halice."

I then proceeded to watch it again on youtube, joined several community, wrote another Plaude/Alice story and fought the urge for a mix.

I get a bit carried away with things. [laugh]

Mm, I gotta say, Hatter really hits my non-traditionally handsome, funny, sweet underdog kink.

Ooh, what communities have popped up?

Aw, no such thing with a new fandom. ^^

I know. Without him, I doubt I would've liked it half as much.

I joined alice_fluff, new_wonderland, alice_hatter and alice_graphics. [laugh]

Absolutely. Well, you could hardly have an Alice in Wonderland story without the Mad Hatter, but they didn't have to make him as awesome and adorable as he is.

Hee, well, usually I try to avoid 'ship-specific communities, but it looks like [livejournal.com profile] alice_hatter's got way too much delightful fic to ignore.

I continue to be inordinately pleased that my entire Flist loooooves Alice. Also: HATTER HATTER HATTER. Because it's obligatory at this point.

Well I just had to check it out to see what you were flailing so enthusiastically about. Mmm, Hatter... *dreamy sigh*

I havent't seen any of the new Who, not even the season 4 finale. I just can't seem to muster the energy.

It was tough for me as well. Can't really pinpoint why- it's just not working for me the way it used to.

I am so pissed off. Usually I love snow so much but this particular snowfall is just ruining things left and right for me. *pouts*

Anyway. TV...I want to want to watch TV shows. I mean, I still haven't seen the last episode of White Collar, among other things. And this Alice show looks like it has potential. I'm just really not in the mood for anything. Blah. Maybe next week I'll watch something.

I have yet to decide if I'm going to try to make my noon photo session or not. It's at least a half hour drive under normal conditions, so I really don't want to think about what it'll be like now. I... don't think I'm going to go. Sorry, Dad.

Yeah, I definitely get that- just not feeling like putting in the effort. I would suggest you make a little time for White Collar, though.

From: [identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think it'd be best not to try it, especially if it's as bad there as it is here. Safer to stay home. Maybe you could reschedule?

I may give it a shot today. I'm in a better mood.

Date: 2009-12-19 02:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com
Yeah, as much as I'd like to battle my way through the storm and arrive in a gust of triumph (I imagine there would be applause)... I should really just reschedule.

Yay!

They might not even be open. I'm not sure if Barnes and Noble is going to be open tonight, either.

Woo! Just in a few minutes.

I would be highly unsurprised if that was the case. I can't imagine it's a big shop.

Man, I remember seeing commercials for White Collar and being so utterly blase about it, all "Oh, well, that's going to be an utter waste of air time, ah ha ha ha." It's not a perfect show by any means, but it definitely bypassed those first impressions.

Date: 2009-12-19 02:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com
They're probably just as happy not to have to drive in as you are.

Hee, I do recall that. I think you thought it was going to be very cliche but that the leads had slashy potential. Well, part of that was true enough.

Oddly enough, all this talk about snow makes me want some in Florida. Not a storm, mind you, but not the 72 degree weather we have.

The two Doctor Who specials were okay. I think they're mostly masturbatory writing for RTD at this point since he's leaving with David Tennant. So I'm looking forward to the Ten finale and seeing how it is with Eleven and Stephen Moffat at the reins.

I'm going to give Alice a watch... once I have time after Christmas. My job is taking over my life.

From: [identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com
I don't know how much I would/wouldn't miss snow if I lived in Florida. Probably not that much, when I think back to how badly it screws up important plans...

Ye-eah, you're probably right. I am looking forward to having Stephen Moffat take control- he has some serious talent.

Heh, preaching to the choir, hon. But I hope you do check it out eventually.

I used to enjoy the change of seasons and the first snow. I was over it before winter was mostly over, but 80 degrees in December isn't right. *laughs* I have all these sweaters and coats I want to wear but can't.

Moffat's episodes have been hit or miss for me. Blink and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dancers are three of the best the series has ever had. But I'm meh on The Girl in the Fire Place and despised the ones from S4 he did that I can't even remember the names of. *laughs* Overall though, I think he's a much better writer than RTD.

My job should let up after Christmas. Hopefully. I'll try to catch it then.

Aw, that would bug me, having clothes I really want to wear, but not the climate in which to wear them.

See, RTD will always have a small place in my heart for Second Coming, which was so amazing and brave and had one of the best endings I've ever seen. But these later DW episodes... I mean, "Voyage of the Damned" was just.. awful. And the specials I watched recently were wholly mediocre. So, I guess it's just time for him to hang it up.

Yay!

I sort of wear my sweaters anyway, even though it's hot. I worse my trenchcoat yesterday too when it rained.

His handling of Torchwood annoyed me as well. As much as I loved Ianto, I think I could have dealt with him dying if it actually affected the story and didn't happen within four episodes of two other main characters being killed. He also pretty much systematically dismantled the show by literally blowing up and destroying it's recurring devices. Not that Torchwood was ever great television or anything.

From: [identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com
See? You make it work, and don't get stuck inside your house by unpleasant weather conditions. Not that I'm particularly complaining just yet.

I don't even bother with Torchwood. I watched most of S1, and John Hart's first appearance (mostly to see Spike make out with a guy- bad slasher *slaps wrist*), but that's it.
