in the daylight, anywhere feels like home

It's been such a World War II weekend for me. Inglorious Basterds yesterday (awesome film, lots of fun), then Casablanca this morning, and now Band of Brothers is being shown on Spike and I'm gonna watch it (and have fun playing a rousing game of "Hey, It's That Guy!" ETA: OMG, that was Simon Pegg with an American accent!).
Other than that, I finally got the chance to watch Cracker and witnes the magic that is D.C.I. David Bilborough, thanks to
visiblemarket. I definitely enjoyed it, though TBH I'm glad it was just the first season, and that only three two-part episodes long. I got my fill of shows where the characters spend every single scene psychoanalyzing each other when I watched House. But otherwise, it's a good time. Bilborough was a treat when he stopped acting like a twerp, which was maybe a little rarer than I would've liked. Penhaligon was my favorite character, when she wasn't tempting Fitz to cheat on his wife. Though, that's another thing- during the second episode he seemed pretty thoroughly on the outs with Judith. Cut to episode three and they're back living together. How'd that happen? Ah well, it's not like I was in it for Fitz anyway. Sorry, Mister Coltrane.
Anyway, it's a big day tomorrow. My first trip to the Renaissance Festival in two years- I'm psyched. Yeah, that's what kind of dork I am, in case you're wondering. I don't have a costume, but I'm definitely in it for more than the turkey legs.
Also, got a music rec for ya'. You know that Bacardi commercial, where the guy walks backwards in time to get to the bar and order a mojito? Well, the song they play during it is "Daylight" by Matt & Kim. I ended up buying the album it's on a while back and finally got around to listening to it today. It's pretty darn good. A few of the songs have this neat sound that's kind of old and.. spacious. Empty, in a good way. Like standing in a big old theater, if that makes sense. And a lot of, if not all, of the songs have this strong, heavy beat to them that I like. Interesting stuff, for sure. Here, have "Daylight" on the house, I suggest you go get the rest.

Date: 2009-09-06 11:59 pm (UTC)It seriously is. They really do a lot of knife twisting over it.
Heh. Not from Peter's perspective, but true.
Well, based on how she treated him when he showed up at the projection room in the end, she still didn't see him as that threatening. Which, she should have. I'm trying not to get too involved; I'm supposedly "writing something" at the moment.

Date: 2009-09-07 12:08 am (UTC)Hmph. Well that's just mean.
Yeah, but then Peter can hardly complain considering all the stunts he's pulled.
Yeah, I guess you're right. She never would've been able to see him as anything but a Nazi, but a relatively harmless, somewhat doofy Nazi. Which, yes, was a big mistake. "Something" for Inglorious Basterds, or for something else? I'll take either, of course.

Date: 2009-09-07 12:28 am (UTC)There's a whole radio message situation and then they keep playing it and it hurts more each time.
*laughs* I think Peter is pretty justified in complaining about a lot of things, but he probably wouldn't.
A relatively harmless, somewhat doofy, and adorable Nazi. And also apparently based on a real-life (American) soldier. "Something" for the Heroes kink meme.

Date: 2009-09-07 12:40 am (UTC)Wow, this gets crueler and crueler the more I hear about it.
Yeah, and I bet deep down Claude would not want to be one of those things, but...
Ha, there's some irony for you. Did they make a movie about him? Ah, you don't say. I was seriously considering trying out one of the prompts on there. Saved it on a document and everything.

Date: 2009-09-07 12:44 am (UTC)Well, it was meant to really shake people up. So, yup.
Probably not, no. But he did leave...
Not only did they make a movie about him, he starred in it. Ooh, which one? Mine, I feel, is pretty close to something I've written already, because I am lazy.

Date: 2009-09-07 12:56 am (UTC)Well there's shaking people up and then there's.. that.
But he wouldn't have if he didn't have to, yes?
Ah, right, Audie Murphy- I knew that sounded somewhat familiar, a young war hero starring in a movie about himself. Hee, oh you crafty Quentin Tarantino. Hmm, I'm beginning to suspect we've honed in on the same prompt. Is it perhaps on page eight?

Date: 2009-09-07 01:00 am (UTC)It's a bit like the Wash situation, I guess. But I get the feeling that, as usual, CE was just kind of not willing to stick around for more than one season.
I remember him showing up in a Cracked list. But it certainly was cool of QT to use the idea of it and give it a twist. *laughs* Maybe. I was also considering another one that is likewise similar to one I've already written which is on the tenth page.

Date: 2009-09-07 01:15 am (UTC)I guess so. Boy, when you look at it that way we really got off lucky with a quip and a slammed door, didn't we?
Yeah, one of those "Top Ten Toughest Soldiers" lists, right? I think I remember that. It is cool, I like it quite a bit. The one on page ten's interesting too (possibly inspired by your earlier fic). Didn't catch my eye as much as the one on eight, but if you've already written a fill for it it's cool.

Date: 2009-09-07 01:19 am (UTC)You know, I never thought of it like that. But I have thought about how lucky we were to get a patented CE Tragic Death Scene that didn't actually end in death.
Indeed; I just went back to look for it, and I won't link it because I'll just get sucked back into that site again. Well, "written" is saying something. I don't know if I'll actually finish anything, so...plus there's no rules against there being more than one. The one on ten I'd definitely write but just for some snarky banter, I don't think I'd be able to get it to smut.

Date: 2009-09-07 01:29 am (UTC)Yup, and we still get to enjoy him in GN-form, of nothing else. That's more than can be said for the Bilborough fans out there.
Heh, I've mostly passed the stage where Cracked can suck me in for hours, but that is a very good article. Well, okay, lemme ask one thing: is it from Claude's POV? If there's that much difference, I'd be more comfortable. I'd say the one on ten doesn't lend itself all that easily to actual smut- not when Peter's seriously ill. At least I hope not.

Date: 2009-09-07 01:33 am (UTC)*sigh* Sometimes we can. But yes, better than poor Bilborough. What with his happy ending that it's impossible to improve upon. With his wife and family and all that.
Hah, I'm still pretty entertained. They just had one with the most random fight scenes ever and then I had to watch the videos themselves and laugh and laugh. Um, it's in Peter's, but I can a) still change it or b) retool it into something else that I keep meaning to finish anyway. As for the one on 10, "dying" is really such a broad term. I could work with that.

Date: 2009-09-07 01:40 am (UTC)Exactly, those poor Bilborough fans, having to make due with their character's perfect, untouchable bliss.
Hm, maybe I'll drop by there soon. I actually did read the "disturbing children's toys" list and had some good laughs. No, no, you leave it just as it is, barring necessary editorial changes. Hm, well, if we're looking at a House-style Claude, his patients are usually in a pretty bad way. But, nonetheless, there's leeway to play with.

Date: 2009-09-07 01:45 am (UTC)Really, who would want that? It's so much more fun when characters are miserable.
Hee. There was one about the worst possible fetishes and that was fun too. Awesome; let's see if I can actually finish it. Well, not the clinic patients; those are just kind of stupid. I have a couple of ideas but they would require research. And you know how I feel about that.

Date: 2009-09-07 02:04 am (UTC)Sometimes. Not all the time, but sometimes.
Ha, I think I remember one that was like "Work Safe Fetishes," which was actually somewhat interesting. Mmkay, maybe I'll give my idea a shot tomorrow. Hee, well, I'll go ahead and encourage you on your endeavours, as the world could never not use more Dr. Rains.

Date: 2009-09-07 02:16 am (UTC)When they're miserable, you have reason to write them some happiness. That's fun.
That was good; the one about Historical Figures That Were Nearly Impossible To Kill also makes me laugh a lot. Mmm, well, I do have tomorrow off, so I'll try to finish at least one of them.

Date: 2009-09-07 02:30 am (UTC)Ah, so canon misery = fic happiness?
And I think I will go get some sleep now. It's been a long day and if the muse gets rolling tomorrow, I'd like to be up early to meet her. 'Night!

Good night!
