I'm off on a New York visit with [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket on Thursday, but I won't be super available on Wednesday, so let's have one of these for the road!

11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

Hmm, interesting question. Are we talking literary genres or fandom genres? If the former, I don't really think I have a preferance or a tendency genre-wise. Every so often I've felt like writing something a little horror-inflected, which is weird because I've read extremely little in the way of horror fiction. And, I dunno, sometimes I like getting into something suspenseful and plotty. I guess I'd be lying if "romance" didn't fit any of my stuff.

As for fandom genres, I've tried my hand at plenty. Off the top of my head, crossovers, AUs, time-travel, a little gender-swap. Of course slash, if you consider that a genre. Probably more, I don't feel like digging.

Anywho, d'awww, White Collar, I almost thought there wouldn't be a lovely Peter/Neal hug upon their reunion. Silly me.

Man, I completely gave up on this meme, didn't I? *sigh* I think technically the only genre I really stick to when I write is romance. Contemporary realism and romance. Or ~erotica, I suppose.

Oh god, I completely missed White Collar. And Covert Affairs. I'd like to say it was because I was cleaning my room in anticipation of you coming by, but...that is so not why.

[identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com 2012-07-11 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hur hur hur, erotica. Well, yeah. Goodness gracious.

Whoops! I'm surprised I remembered myself. Sorry, WC, you just don't stick as well as some shows.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2012-07-11 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well I try and put some themes and feels and banter in there to make it more than just porn, okay. So erotica it is. Ugh, I'm a hack.

How was it? I'll...maybe catch up on it? I've been having trouble getting back into a lot of the old shows I used to watch, though. But mainlined the first season of Teen Wolf over three days, because I don't know, peer pressure.

[identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com 2012-07-11 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, your output volume isn't high enough to reach hack status. ;) Anyway, sometimes I like to think about the people who would be shocked, SHOCKED, by how many technically erotica writers there are in the world, thanks to fandom.

It was okay, I guess. Honestly I was paying, like, 40% attention to it. As usual.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2012-07-11 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if that's actually true: I'm in a slump right now, but for a while there, I was writing a fair amount, and it was mostly porn erotica, so. LET ME HAVE THIS. What was it "unpublished stories from independent writers online"? I'm an independent writer online.

*sigh* Maybe when we get back. I don't know how many spare moments we'll have in NYC, although honestly I haven't planned out much. I'm doing a tour of the new law school building on Friday morning, but that's the only set thing. We could go to Cones and the Dorian Gray bar.

[identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com 2012-07-11 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we've all established ourselves as independent writers online, for sure.

Those sound cool! I'd like to go to the Botanical Gardens, and the High Line, and the Met or the Guggenheim, maybe the zoo in Central Park. Basically tourist it up tourist style.

We are artistes, definitely. Speaking of you may get to see me in the posting process this afternoon, which is...always hilarious.

The Guggenheim is kind of pricey to get into and usually not worth it, but we can definitely go see it from the outside. We should also go to The Strand.

Ooh la la!

Okay, my boss said the Met's admission is just a "suggested donation," so there's that. They sell books at the Strand, right?

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2012-07-11 11:25 am (UTC)(link)

The Met is definitely worth it: they've got an Egyptian temple! And other stuff, it's nice. They do sell books at the Strand, both new and used, and it's huge and musty and awesome. The have a tumblr.

Have an awesome trip! I'm glad the weather got better before you left.

If you're looking for free stuff to do, walking the High Line is always fun: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/usa/new-york-city/travel-tips-and-articles/77281

And if you feel like riding out to Flushing, the New World Mall has a really fun food court (really cheap and almost all in Chinese, so you do lots of pointing and gesturing).

OMG, seriously! So freaking glad the heat wave broke before this trip.

Ooh, yes, I do want to check out the High Line, I've seen pictures and it looks so cool. Thanks for the suggestions!

The High Line is probably my favorite thing to do in NYC. It's pretty, and very cool!

I hope you have a wonderful trip!
