To get through it I pretended he was a sandwich. :D

So last week I started a re-watch of Doctor Who's season five via Netflix, but that kind of got backburnered because on Sunday something inside told me it was time to watch 30 Rock. All of it, or at least all the seasons available on Instant Watch. So I'm in the fourth season now, anxiously awaiting the arrival of Wesley Snipes. Don't tell me what episode he starts in- I want to be surprised.

But anyway it's been nice to finally find out where quotes I've seen on [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket's icons in various places come from. Stuff like "Live every week like it's Shark Week," and "Past Pete is here to kill Future Pete!" My subject line is a quote that stands out to me as Liz at her most adorable. Oh Liz. I'm afraid I just don't 'ship her with Jack, which is most likely unfortunate from a social standpoint in the fandom. I mean, canon seems pretty definite- every time the idea of them getting together comes up both of their reactions are complete "DNW." I suppose if you want to you can see that as a "the lady doth protest too much" situation, but ultimately I prefer them as friends. Because they are so adorable that way, at least when they're getting along- Jack softens up a bit and Liz becomes almost childlike at times, IMO.

So, yeah, that's kind of been my life for this first week of 2011- coming home from work and watching as many episodes of 30 Rock as I can before bed. It's pretty awesome.

One downside, though. I'm currently reading Small Gods, and Brutha keeps turning into Kenneth in my head. Not that it isn't a good fit, but I already had Russell Tovey all picked out, so shoo, Jack McBrayer, shoo!

P.S. I did manage to tear myself away last night for long enough to watch Top Gear. Totally loved Rutledge selling his Lexus to that audience member for a buck and a Members Only jacket. Only on Top Gear, folks. And earlier, after he bought the Lexus, saying he "felt fancy." Aww, Rutledge. I swear, every episode I have a different favorite host.

You do not cross a Sugarbaker woman!

Aw, 30 Rock. I still love it so. It's almost comforting to watch it; it may not be laugh out loud hilarious all the time, but it's always just...30 Rock, and I appreciate that.

As for Liz and Jack, I like that Tina Fey kind of addressed it back in S1, and has always been pretty clear about it not being that kind of relationship. I hate to be one of those "but why would you want to ruin their friendship with shipping?!" kind of people, but...well, one of my favorite parts of their interaction is the fact that at first, Jack almost seems surprised by how much he likes her despite Liz not being a sexual prospect. That's such a large part of how he seems to interact with women otherwise, and for it not to be there makes what the two of them have even more special.

I kind of see them as non-sexual soul mates. Liz because I don't think she likes sex all that much (which is fine) and Jack because he can get fulfillment otherwise and have Liz as, basically, his bro. I think Liz especially has no desire to be otherwise. Jack seems to have hints of it, sometimes (especially around S1 and S2) but that may just have been Alec Baldwin's high regard for Tina Fey peeking through, so. I do get why people ship them, but I really don't, either. I'm still all about Gretchen/Liz, Stuart/Liz, and maybe Wesley/Carol/Liz.

Oh shark farts!

You know, I think the fourth season may be the funniest one yet. And I think they pushed the Jack/Liz thing more, with him telling Danny he's secretly in love with her and her having the dream where they're married and she gives birth to Meat Cat. But still, meh.

Also, it disappoints me to say it, but I don't think Wesley/Liz works for me. I mean, the whole point of their relationship is that they have 0 chemistry with each other, no matter how much they interact. Honestly, Wesley seems like kind of a prissy jerk. At least he did in "Don Geiss, America, and Hope." Here's hoping that changes by the next episode he's in. Otherwise, absolutely Gretchen/Liz, she was great! And Stuart/Liz, sure! I'll reserve comment on Carol since I've only seen the one part with him in it and he.. wasn't at his best.

I wolfed my Teamster sub for you!

Heh, I think by the fourth season Tina Fey is just baiting the shippers a little. There's that episode that ends with the big romantic "It's you! It's always been you!" scene, with the swirling and everything. And hee, I love that dream, he's holding her hand and calls her Lizzie, which I think is just keen and I'm so not even a shipper.

I think I like the idea of Wesley and Liz kind of...adjusting to each other over time. Like I don't think they should actually get married if they loathe each other, but...they could bring each other some happiness. Okay so maybe I read a fic like that and now I'm attached to the possibility. I liked his line to her about her food obsession not being as cute as she thinks it is. I mean I find it cute (I think everyone of my favorite quotes of hers are in some way food related) but I don't know, it amused me. Plus they both went to see "Hot Tub Time Machine" independently, I have to think that's a sign of something. Gretchen is so awesome, I kind of hope that if Jack ever leaves the show, she's brought in as his replacement. Which will not happen, but just saying. Stuart I love because he went along with Liz's "Transfer me to the Italian ambassador, I'd like to make-a prank call-a" and the rest of her crazy, plus he likes foreign street food, and aggressive women with a nerdy vibe. Man I think I would totally date Stuart. And Carol's just such a goofball. He's great in "I Do, Do" and so is Wesley.

Ye-eah, the spinning and declarations of devotion were probably a bit of poke at the shippers. Aww, somebody else should call her Lizzie too, that would be adorable.

Well, I'd read that fic just to see how it might work out, though anyone who calls himself "charming" is officially on notice for me. I do like the food obsession line because it lets you know she annoys him as much as he annoys her, which is good for equality, I guess. All that being said, though, you cannot refute the cosmic compatability of them both going to see Hot Tub Time Machine. It was pretty brave of the show's writers to have Liz's first romantic possibility be a woman and not played completely for laughs. Stuart was definitely intriguing- too bad Liz ruined it so utterly. I'm definitely looking forward to Carol and crossing my fingers Wesley improves for "I Do, I Do."

I think that's at least partly the reason the fandom's been so bitchy about it lately, but it just makes me smile. I'm totally okay with Jack calling her Lizzie in that friendly, best bros kind of way.

There's a couple: this is specifically the one I'm talking about, but this is cute too, and this is shamelessly fluffy but features Doctor Who so I kind of like it on principle. This has a short, sweet little bit Liz/Gretchen vignette (the rest of it is good too, but that's my favorite). And those are just about literally the only good 30 Rock fics I have ever read. *laughs* Okay not true, some of the Jack/Liz stuff is decent, but...yeah. This is a bit of Jack backstory and I think it's kind of awesome, but I love Bianca and her crazy, so.

[identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, reading the comments on the Liz/Not!Jack fics- yeah, these shippers are pretty darn invested. Shame it's never going to happen.

Aww, yeah, okay, that first one, if Carol had never shown up then, yes, Wesley/Liz could work and I believe wholeheartedly that that's exactly how it would. Dang, that writer has a good Liz!voice, I'm impressed.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, if you read the comments, you probably also saw someone familiar gushing ridiculously about things.

You know, it's not surprising given the fanbase, but Liz is apparently one of the easiest characters on the show to get right. Jack is a lot harder; people seem to think he talks like a robot programed by Neocons. It's one of the reasons I stopped reading Jack/Liz fic, even beyond the fact that I didn't ship them.

[identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I only skimmed the first handful. So, you know, later.

Jeez, I don't think I'd be able to do Liz much justice. Maybe. Probably not. Jack I think would take research, unless you just wanted to make up some ridiculously expensive and fancy stuff for him to name-drop.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Comment voyeur.

Hah, I may just be projecting, but I tend to feel like most of the fanbase are basically Lizes themselves. To some degree at least. I think the key to Jack is that he's both entirely who he pretends to be, and also the Irish-Catholic scholarship kid with a crappy family. Which is maybe a little too srs bsns for 30 Rock fic, but...yeah.

[identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
You know it!

Ye-eah, can't deny that. Doesn't mean I think I can faithfully transcribe the voice to fic. Well, I'm giving the Jack backstory fic you linked me to a pass until tomorrow. I should really be getting to bed before it's too late to say I'm going to bed early.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I do. I think I read it in a comment somewhere.

Well, I've only done it once, for the 30 Rock/CE fic thing, but it didn't feel that hard. I like the Jack backstory fic, but sometimes I like it more as an OC short story than anything. I waver.

[identity profile] gingerberrysnap.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been really far behind on 30 Rock. Like super far. I haven't watched any of this season. But I love Wesley Snipes! Did you get to those episodes yet?

[identity profile] lotus0kid.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I've just finished up the fourth season, and I don't think I've seen more than an episode or two of the fifth. Anyway, Wesley... I think maybe he kind of hits my feminist button a little bit, TBH. The way he kept telling Liz they were going to be together, like she didn't even get a say in the matter? Not cool, guy. Though I did like when he called her "my luscious plum."
