braaaiiins (and bloodclots)

Well, I wouldn't declare it an out-right and total success, but, once again, they're edible, even tasty, and I've yet to double over in digestive agony from the one I ate.

One thing I will definitely do in the future is put more batter in each.. cupcake.. depression thing. Like I said, the recipe was supposed to make eight- so I set up eight and had a ton of batter left over, along with four empty spots on the pan. I called my mom to check how much batter I should put in each spot, and she said to fill them up two-thirds of the way. Either her or my estimation of two-thirds was off, or the "self-rising" dough I bought wasn't all that, because only a couple cupcakes managed to crest the top of the pan. Also, they took for-flipping-ever to cook. 180 degrees for twenty minutes my ass! Next time, two hundred degrees at least, for sure. I might let them get a little more brown too.

The finished cupcakes. The best one is on the bottom row, second one in. Anyway, I will also keep the icing in the fridge when it's not in active use. It got a little too soft as I was working with it. I did get a very decent shade of brain matter gray, though. I think the mixture was three drops of black food coloring, two drops of green, and two drops of red.

Ewww, and also mmmm at the same time. The icing came out very light and sweet. I'd never really tried to make icing look like something before, except like a sweet substance covering a baked good. Squeezing it out of the snipped-off corner of a Ziploc bag was challenging. I wish I could've smoothed out the little peaks of icing- if anyone has a spikey brain like that, he/she needs to see a doctor right away.

Those are the best three, plus a view of the strawberry bloodclot on the inside of one. They're all sitting in the fridge now, hoping to hold the brain-ish shape of the icing until I can take them to the office on Monday or something.

That's a pic of Shadow lounging on my bed on the day following his arrival. I've since found out that while unlike Greebo in his friendliness to all people and not just his Nanny equivalent, Shadow does possess some fierce hunting skills. I haven't seen him catch anything, but my aunt and cousins say they've seen him get all kinds of small prey. I think that's what accounts for his girth more than a lazy nature or possibly indulgent owners. He eats what's given to him, and then goes out and gets his own.
