lotus0kid: (only love)
Got a very cool [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 meme on Friday:

Five favorite beta or ambiguously canon relationships (link goes to TVtropes)

I love beta couples! Honestly, I tend to find them more interesting than the main couples, maybe because the characters aren't as fully developed (because character development can sometimes mean draping him/her/them in cliches).

Only trouble is I just know there are dozens I'm forgetting. Anyway, some spoilers. )

*sigh* If I'm smart, I will clean today. Like a real clean, not just vacuuming the kitchen and wiping down the trouble spots in the bathroom. Come on, self, you can listen to music while you do it, it'll be nice.
lotus0kid: (HP/MST3K)
Woof. Long day, but a good one. My mom came over to help me finally hang all my pictures. It's pretty great to have them all up- I've got the two paintings I did (planning to fix the sky in one, now I also have my old art supplies), this big needlepoint thing of a field of flowers that my mom did in 1976, the winged lion print I got from RenFest, the cork board of photographs I've taken (and in some cases developed myself), even the poster of a tree getting struck by lightning that you can see in the background of Reaper sometimes. Speaking of which, Netflix Instant Play's gone and done it again- I've been re-watching Reaper and it's even better than I remember. *sigh* Why are all the shows I love doomed to die premature deaths? I would say the USA Network shows seem to be exempt, but I wouldn't want to jinx it.

Also while my mom was here, we cooked. Man, please let me have half the talent and efficiency of my mother after I've been cooking for thirty years or so. We bought one chicken, some vegetables, some broth, some pasta sauce, and some whipping cream, and made enough tasty, nutritious meals to feed me for upwards of a month. Just in time too- I've only got one more frozen Ziploc of chicken tetrazzini from our previous cooking marathon.

I'd really like to have a bid up on the [livejournal.com profile] help_japan auction, but there's no way I can with my other auction fic still hanging over my head. *sigh* I've been so blocked lately, what with one thing and another. That's a cop-out, but hopefully this new flavor of guilt will help me get off my ass. But for now, I'm sure my body will thank me for allowing it another early night to adjust to Daylight Savings.

(Ooh, the sky's doing that thing you only see in summer when everything gets tinged a really cool shade of pink/yellow/green. I love that.)

So, had a meeting with one of those temp agency guys today. We'll see if anything comes of that. I think it might, since I have a somewhat decent amount of experience now. The guy seemed fairly enthusiastic. Tomorrow I will definitely start looking at GRE study materials. I've been horrifically lazy to let it go this long. I will also go to the grocery store and buy actual ingredients for things. What things, I'm not sure, but I will.

Some feral anti-virus program has latched onto my computer. It keeps popping up with "ZOMFG YOU'VE BEEN INFECTED REGISTER NOW" messages that I'm really hoping will stop if I click "GO AWAY, FFS" enough. For now I've just got my Task Manager up to zap the messages that way.

I don't normally stay up for it- so much easier to dash over to the website to see the latest episode- but I do want to see if The Daily Show has anything cool to say about the awesome news on Prop 8.

Hm, I wanted to have more fun things to talk about, but.. yeah. Oh hey, Rifftrax is doing another live show on the nineteenth! Reefer Madness, the colorized version. So, yeah, that'll be cool. Also, completely at random today while I was working on cover art for a song mix I'm putting together, I found "Shalala" by Martin McFaul. It's a pretty darn cool song you can go here to download. If his whole album is like that, I might not be able to resist buying it.

*sigh* I shouldn't, since it will probably interfere with those grandiose GRE and grocery plans I have for tomorrow, but my fic-writing brain feels like it's been stagnating since finishing the bigboom fic, so...

Give me a prompt for a five-sentence fic.

Thanks kindly! Now I gotta run and see if the TV's free for Burn Notice.

ETA: Name your five favorite evil characters. Heh, I see what you did there, fannish5. No spoilers. )
lotus0kid: (Default)
*sigh* So, looks like if I want to listen to music in the car through my iPhone, I'm going to have to get this update taken off somehow. How can I do that? Dunno. Can I do that? Dunno. Will I also have to take the update off my iTunes account, and if so how would I do that? Double dunno. If I do, will a message from iTunes saying there's an update available pop up every time I plug it into my laptop? Seems likely. But will I be able to charge my iPhone from places other than my laptop or the wall socket? Yes. Will I be able to once again use the alarm clock radio that's only two years old? Double yes.

Oy. You know, I was really hoping it wasn't wishful thinking to suppose that Apple would consult with the companies that make accessories for its products before releasing a big update that makes those accessories incompatible with those products, but... yeah. Boy the world is stupid place sometimes.

Anyway, moving on. Now that the bigboom fic is finished, I get to do a couple memes! Oh memes, how I missed you!

Name the five sweetest fictional characters.

Some folks that make me go 'd'awww.' Also, a spoiler for Lost. )

And an audience-participation meme:

Choose one of my stories and I will do a commentary on it.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] fadeintodawn and I are going to see The Swell Season tomorrow night! For those who don't know, that's the band in the movie Once. I'm pretty jazzed about it. Should be a good time. And it'll be my first concert since Virgin Fest back in, like, 2006. I've never even been to a concert with just one band before (or I guess two if there's an opening act), unless you count the time I saw Governor Martin O'Malley perform with his band back when he was mayor of Baltimore. I don't think that counts when you don't even know the performer is going to be there.

*sigh* Two great shows lost to time... )

From [livejournal.com profile] rionaleonhart:

- Write a list of characters and number them.
- Input the number of characters into this random number generator as the maximum and generate two numbers.
- Ramble about how the corresponding pairing/partnership/general interaction would (or, indeed, wouldn't) work. Perhaps write a snippet/one-sentence fic for it if you're feeling brave.
- Repeat to your heart's content.

Fandoms represented: Reaper, Middleman, Firefly, Discworld, Watchmen, Better Off Ted, Burn Notice, and Heroes )
lotus0kid: (kinda cool)
Sooo, I've got the complete series of The Middleman sitting next to me, and I just finished watching the Comic Con table read of the final latest episode. Yup, order me up another grin-ectomy. I'm gonna need it. Inna godda da vida!

In other news, temp work is hopefully a go, soon. It's funny, I was reading one of the contracts you have to sign, and, I dunno, it was kind of cool. I felt like I was some kind of admin mercenary being sent out to companies in need of my services. I'm a dork. But a happier dork than I was yesterday.

I'm also a meme sheep! Snatched most recently from [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket:

List the first ten series that come to mind. Your friends will comment with the character from each series that they think you are most like.

1. The Middleman
2. Firefly
3. Heroes
4. Better Off Ted
5. Reaper
6. Doctor Who
7. Discworld
8. Pushing Daisies
9. Psych
10. (Oh, I'm asking for it, but) Watchmen
lotus0kid: (Firefly/MST3K)
I guess I need that long to scrape together something worth talking about.

So here goes. [livejournal.com profile] remixthedrabble's latest contest is all wrapped up, and I'd very much like to share the drabbles I was lucky enough to be given. They're all awesome and completely fit the fics they sprang from:
Engine oil and a 03-K64 (Springs and Circuits Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] maharetr
Slow Dance (The Walkin' After Midnight Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] sophinisba
The Man Behind The Man (The Man in the Mountain Remix) by our very own [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket

As for my own remixes, I did...
Delegation (Lost Souls Remix) for [livejournal.com profile] amathela- a Dead Like Me/Reaper crossover featuring Gladys (aka Delores), George, and Sam
Stay Safe Tonight (It's Always a Gamble Remix) for [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket- as if anyone reading this hasn't already read that, but it's a WW2 AU with Peter and Claude (not that you can actually tell from my drabble, but oh well)
Turnover (Weapon Remix) for [livejournal.com profile] melodyunity- Firefly, a pre-series look at River

I polished off Pride and Prejudice and Zombies last night, and since some folks wanted to know what I thought of it, here's what I thought of it: it was pretty darn cool )

Anyway, aside from all that, my mom and I are headed to Florida on Wednesday to visit my sister. We'll get back on Saturday, but until then I very much doubt I'll be around. So there's that. Gotta go now, there are some wilted daffodil remains in the garden that need seeing to before it gets too hot.
lotus0kid: (9&Rose)
I'm slogging through rewrites of my revised paper for comps, like I did yesterday. I just need to think of one more solid thing to say about Leontes and Hermione in The Winter's Tale, hmmmm...

While I was not being here, this caught my eye from [livejournal.com profile] fannish5:

Name 5 characters you think really need a hug.

Man, I bummed myself out making this list. Also, possible spoilers. )

ETA: Okay, so I am tentatively done with my revised comps paper. Now, because the weather is sublime, I'm going to go shop for my mother's birthday present downtown. Why is this important? Because I will be wearing, for the first time, my Team Zissou tank-top (like that, only light blue). I've been waiting to bust this baby out since Christmas. Excitement!

ETA2: NINETY DOLLAR FINE FOR GOING FIFTEEN MILES OVER THE SPEED LIMIT- WTF. ALSO, WHERE THE HELL HAS MY REGISTRATION CARD WANDERED OFF TO?
lotus0kid: (Default)
My goodness, y'all sure do like your Reaper! Not that I'm complaining. This is the first batch, second'll be up.. when I write them. *sheepish grin*

Blanket Disclaimer: Anything you recognize isn't mine. Which, in the case of these little ficlets, is pretty much everything.

Okay, I'm feeling kind of itchy-in-the-head today, and I want to write, but I don't want to get started on any of my main ideas yet. I just want something light and quick. Like a short work-out. So here's this thing I'm stealing from [livejournal.com profile] rionaleonhart's archives:

Who wants a five-sentence fic? Throw me a prompt and I'll give it a go.

You can see my tags, I'm willing to write for pretty much any of those. Some more than others, but whatever.
lotus0kid: (Firefly/MST3K)
Eee, I got my assignments for [livejournal.com profile] remixthedrabble today. I'm really excited to do them- not least because for one of my optional remixes I got a familiar name. Not someone I've talked to, but someone who I know writes high-quality stuff. So, eee... XD

I was re-watching the pilot of Burn Notice the other day, and discovered that Reaper's Ray Wise and Dexter's David Zayas are both in it. That is, the Devil and Detective Sargeant Angel Batista. The Devil, and Angel. Oh yeah, a seriously awesome crossover must come of this. I also really want to write about Dead Like Me's Rube visiting Pushing Daisies' Pie Hole, ever since they mentioned Happy Time Temp Agency on the latter show, and anyway we know Bryan Fuller is all about mixing up characters among his shows. Goodness, I love when they do that, so very much.

Speaking of Ray Wise (remember? Before the tangent about Bryan Fuller shows), does the guy who plays Papa Petrelli on Heroes remind anyone else of our favorite incarnation of pure evil? Honestly, they could be brothers- the salt and pepper hair, the cold blue eyes, the suit.. the mobster-ish villainy. Heh, as if the Petrelli clan needed to be any more f-ed up than it already is, but think of the fics!

Other Awesome Crossovers [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket And I Have Come Up With But Aren't Currently Writing That I Just Want To Have Written Down Somewhere So I Don't Forget About Them Because They're That Awesome:
-Claude and House (transcontinental cousins FTW)
-Middleman and Aziraphale (and Crowley- how hard a time do you think MM would have coming to grips with The Arrangement?)
-Shawn Spencer and Capt. Jack Harkness (primarily the star-crossed romance of Shawn and Jack's Coat)
lotus0kid: (Default)
Rating: PG, except for the very last bit
Word Count: 253
Disclaimer: Reaper came out of Kevin Smith's head, not mine.
A/N: I've been toying with this idea for a while, finally went ahead and tackled it because [livejournal.com profile] c_quinn's awesometacular. This is for her.
Summary: Sam's got some questions for the Devil. Slight Sam/Devil. Or maybe more than slight, I'll let you make the call.

Why do you ask? )

You and I need to have words. )
lotus0kid: (Default)
Home for a couple weeks, which is nice, as of right now. My mother's got me vacuuming all the floors, so I have a permanent, royal purple bruise on my knee from banging it against that goddamn infernal machine. Whatever- I have my iPod, and I firmly believe that just about any task can be made endurable as long as good tunes are provided.

Speaking of tunes, I'm on a bit of a Brit kick lately. Got Stone Roses' self-titled album, and The Kinks' Villiage Green Preservation Society. Not entirely sure how much I like either one. Stone Roses is okay, but unfortunately somebody turned the vocal tracks way down and the instrumental tracks way up. If I try to listen to the album in my car, I can barely make out any words at all. Quite frustrating.

Village Green Preservation Society... Well, some of the songs are a little... creepy. Not all of them- some of them are in fact really good. But others, not so much. Take "Sitting by the Riverside." Sounds nice, huh? If you listen to it, though, the song is kind of like that moment right before a nice, peaceful dream turns into a nightmare. I uploaded it anyway. It'll make good mood music if I ever need to write about a character who's been brain-washed by some nefarious evil-doer. I'm actually tentatively thinking about something with Claude and the Company. I dunno, we'll see.

In any case, here's something I've actually done more than just think about.

Rating: PG (I'm not giving something with the Devil in it a G-rating)
Word Count: 338
Disclaimer: Don't mind me, I'm just mooching off Kevin Smith's genius, that's all.
Author's Notes: Man, even when he's not doing much, the Devil's fun to write. For [livejournal.com profile] tessykins (sorry it's not porn).
Summary: The Devil pays a visit. (pre-series, techinically canon-compliant up to "The Leak")

Fit for duty. )

ETA: Heh, I think this fic is just vague enough to avoid being Jossed by the latest episode. Sweet!
lotus0kid: (Oh Hamlet)
My goodness, it is toasty like a toasty thing out today. Can someone please tell me what happened to all my shorts? I know I had at least two pairs last summer. Then this summer rolls around and POOF they're gone. Go figure. Maybe they were dropped on a runway somewhere. /bad MST reference

Anyway, despite feeling like I'm going to melt into a small puddle, I have gotten so much stuff done that I've been meaning to get done for ages. I, of course, finished and turned in my last paper (YESSSSS). I've gotten the classes I took in England last semester approved by the registrar (been meaning to do that since about March). I turned in my evaluation for my internship (a day late, but that wasn't really my fault). And I sold back most of my books. I know I should probably give that money to my dad, who bought the books in the first place, but I like to consider it payment for all the hard work I did this semester. And NO ONE can tell me I didn't work damn hard over the last few months. I earned that $67.25. So if I'm going to be greedy about something, it's going to be that.

Um, is it bad that I sold my Stats textbook when the final's on Friday? I mean, the test is open book open note, and I only cracked the book a whopping two times the whole semester and found it exceedingly unhelpful, and I'm sure I can find the charts I need on the internet or ask my professor for photocopies... Yeah, I think I'll be okay. Really, since it's open note, I can basically just copy down the questions from my notes, just replacing the numbers with the actual problem.

Guess what I found out. If I want to wear anything other than sneakers, I have two choices: I can rub holes in my insteps, or I can rub holes in my little toes. One or the other, no exceptions. Wheee. Ouch.

Reaper yammering )

I'm thinking about doing a few prompts from this: "Because We're Awesome" Drabble-a-thon. It's been a really long time since I wrote from a female perspective, and that worries me slightly. Sure, they're just drabbles, but I'd say it'd still be good exercise.

Before I do that, though, it seems I've got another thing in me for the Late Spring/False Winter verse. Yes, again. I think I might be dipping into that verse every so often for a very long time.
