Honestly, though, I did recently find out that I was born and raised in the fifth richest county in the country. Ye-eah... *fidgets under mink coat of privilege*

Anywho, meme! From [livejournal.com profile] zombres:

She gave me some kickass questions, for serious. )
lotus0kid: (5 seconds)
So, I'm currently inching through Made in America: an Informal History of the English Language in the United States by Bill Bryson. I'm learning lots of interesting stuff. Like, you know the phrase "stiff upper lip?" Of course you do. Guess what- Americanism, coined in 1815. Earlier I read Bryson's Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way where I learned why the word "colonel" is the way it is (we use the French-ish spelling, but the Italian-ish pronunciation- neato!). I really do love English linguistics. Every word is... well, kind of like a person, with a whole geneology of other words that it came from, and words it's related to. The English language is very much like the American people... if you want to get super sappy about it. *winces*

Anyway, that's not even what I wanted to talk about! See, I'm inching through Made in America because it is a huge thick hardback. And since I really don't like carrying those around wherever I go, instead I've been carrying around the nice portable paperback Discworld book The Last Continent. And today the IT guy installed something on my computer he then had to spend over an hour trying to uninstall, so I had time to dip into it, and I came across this:

[T]here's something comforting in knowing that some of the best brains in the University... were spending all night in the High Energy Magic Building, trying to teach Hex to sing "Lydia the Tattooed Lady," exulting at getting a machine to do after six hours' work something that any human off the street would do for tuppence...

Hmm, I knew a tattooed lady named Lydia... Heroes, did you.. did you make a very obscure Discworld reference that last season? If so, I would feel the tiniest bit better about that whole hot mess.

So, something to ponder. I'm off to watch Breakfast on Pluto.

List your top ten (10) favorite characters from a single anime fandom (whoops, didn't read that quite closely enough), and answer the following questions.

(You know what? I'm gonna go with multiple fandoms. It's more fun that way.)
1 - The Middleman
2 - Mal Reynolds
3 - Elizabeth Burke
4 - Claude Rains
5 - Veronica Palmer
6 - Granny Weatherwax
7 - Michael Weston
8 - Olivia Dunham
9 - Amy Pond
10 - Sherlock Holmes

Some weird stuff under this cut, my friends. )

Cross your fingers for me, folks. My very first meatloaf is sizzling away in the oven right now, but unfortunately I don't really know what temperature my oven is set to. Because it's also the first time I've used my oven and some genius messed with the temperature dial so it doesn't read right. So, as of now I'm just kind of babysitting it. I hope the temperature is hotter than it should be, because A) the meatloaf will be done faster and B) I just think I'll be able to tell more easily how done it is. It's looking browner than before, and there's the aforementioned sizzling going on, and it smells pretty tasty. So that's good, right? *runs to check it again* A little browner, a little more sizzling, more or less the same smell.

In other news! Yesterday, apropos to mostly nothing except boredom and hearing about it so much I guess it seeped into my unconscious, I started watching Misfits. I'm all caught up now. *runs to check meatloaf* *runs back to cut for spoilers* )

*checks meatloaf: status report- looks about done through (smoke alarm just went off, I turned on the stove fan and pressed the button on the alarm and it stopped) but a little mushy so I'll let it go a while longer* I don't really like having the fan on. I can't hear the sizzle this way which was helping me keep an eye on it.

All right, took it out.

Looks okay... )

Well, I'm hungry anyway. Once again, as long as I don't poison myself, it's a win! I better go get my mashed potatoes and peas done before it gets cold.

ETA: Damn, I just realized I forgot to put ketchup on it halfway through like you're supposed to. Nuts.

ETA2: Not bad! Maybe next time go a little lighter on the oregano, add a little salt, remember the ketchup. And, y'know, let my landlady know the dial on my oven is somewhat borked.

Wow, I managed not to do a meme for over a month! Not that I was really trying not to- quite the opposite, actually, but still! Sometimes I get annoyed with myself, like I don't have anything to talk about, all I want to do is play silly lj games. But can I help it when they're so fun and interesting so often? No.

Anyway! From, most recently, [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket:

1.) Comment to this and I will give you 3 fictional characters.
2.) Decide of the 3 whom you would marry, do, and dump cliff.
3.) Post this meme to your journal with your answers.

DON'T JUDGE ME. )

Two for the price of one! I did this whole meme once a while ago, but it accidentally got deleted, so I half-way did it again later, but, well, it's really one of those memes that demand... I dunno, immediacy. It gets stale if you leave it alone and then you have to start all over. Anyway, for the third and final time, here's this, stolen aaages ago from [livejournal.com profile] hermione_vader:

1. Write down 20 of your favorite OTPs
2. Put your media player on shuffle. The number of the song corresponds to the number of the OTPs.
3. Quote a part of the song that you think has any similarity with the story of the couple.
4. Comment.

Wee, off work an hour early! Anyway, on to things.

Day 20 - A song that you listen to when you're angry )

In other news, I finally got my posting date for [livejournal.com profile] heroes_bigboom! It's supposed to be on the twenty-eighth, so I'm going to private-post all twelve chapters on my journal sometime this weekend. I think that should let me avoid dropping a spam bomb on other people's f-lists in four days' time. I'm pretty excited about it, I'd say it's a pretty good fic. I'll be glad to have it completely done with at least.

I've been having more fun with Photoshop. I figured out how to use the lasso tool! At least a little.

See, that's what I was going for, really. I've also been abusing radial gradients, making little color blobs where no color blobs should be. One thing I can't figure out though- how do you get one picture to blend into another? I know you can decrease the opacity of one layer what's below it shows through, but how do you, say, make the layer below show through on one side of the picture but not on the other? I was hoping it was in the gradients, but I don't think it is. Hrm.
lotus0kid: (Default)
Man, what is better than a beautiful lazy Saturday morning after a long week of work and various running around? I've had my scrambled eggs, my bagel (half margarine, half Nutella- yummm), and now I've got a cup of the fantastic jasmine tea my sister sent up from Florida. I've got all three Sherlock episodes queued up for viewing, and I haven't quite decided if I'm going to attempt a beef stew today. Hm. Also, I finally caved and bought six months of paid lj time. So, uh, yay extra icons? Heh, that was really all I was interested in. I dunno, maybe I'll fiddle around with my layout.

Anyway, my creepy lj-lurking has found me a meme!

List the first five OTPs that come into your head.

2. Maj. West/Mirror!Wendy
3. Wash/Zoe
4. Alice/Hatter

And answer some questions... )
lotus0kid: (dreamer)
Hee, fandom-y dreams, start your morning off right!

Okay, so, clearly the pics [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket linked last evening pretty thoroughly infected my brain, because I'm pretty sure I was Kate from White Collar in this dream. I dunno, I was certainly holding hands with a strangely scruffy Neal Caffrey enough. Also not really surprisingly, a CE character was with us. I didn't get a solid confirmation of what CE character, but I'm going to go with Claude. Claude was looking very scruffy as well, probably three-quarters of the way to his S1 look. Anyway, we three were conning our way into a fancy restaurant- well, Neal and Claude were, I seemed to be mostly along for the ride. I think Claude got in by impersonating some eccentric and world-famous professor, and Neal his prodigous assistant (who morphed into Joseph Gordon-Levitt for a brief instant- Neal the shapeshifter? That would explain some things). Anyway, we all sat down on one side of a table, and there was an older woman sitting on the other side, possibly played by Vanessa Redgrave (I've been catching the same five minutes of Mission Impossible on TV lately). I think she was hiring Neal and Claude to do some con- I wasn't really paying attention because the hand-holding was somewhat distracting, and also I was busy reading about the really expensive tea selection on the menu.

And then the dream morphed into Michael Weston from Burn Notice helping a family rob a bank and not having the best of luck with it, and I think the teenage daughter might have been played by the same girl who did Alex from Lost. Since I watched the season finale of Burn Notice last night, this part of the dream is also kind of annoyingly explicable. And then I was on a busy street and there were people dressed like the Stig- not everyone, just a few. I was delighted.

And now I'm off to work. But hey, the Renaissance Festival is gearing up this weekend! I think after this busy week I'd prefer to sit out the opening, but next weekend I'm totally there. Anyone want to come?
