lotus0kid: (have a nice day)
Working on my trifecta of chores today. Laundry's done, cleaning's done, cooking... could go either way at this point. We'll see. It's looking like it might rain, and I have to do a quick Safeway run if I'm going to cook...

Had my younger brother's college graduation dinner last night, which was nice. I tried roasted bone marrow! I was looking at the restaurant's menu online the day before and I saw a dish that came with bone marrow and I thought, "Well, Anthony Bourdain seems to like it, I wanna take a shot!" Here's what it looked like, just like on TV: )

It was.. okay I guess. There really wasn't much to it, maybe a spoonful, the spoon being super tiny. I kept poking at bits of it, trying to see if any more was edible. It tasted mostly like the fat on a steak, but a little different. Overall, I probably won't go out of my way for it again.

Otherwise, let's see... The Avengers, aw yeah. Basically everything a dork like me could ask for, plus a surprise Tony/Bruce bonus. Those two... I got serious feels for them, you guys. Did not expect that. I mean, just look, and look, and look. I feel guilty, because Pepper's awesome and she's adorable with Tony, but...

I'm nervous about the OUaT finale. Please don't suck, show. You can... yes, okay, yes, you can Joss all my fic that is, was, or ever could be. Just don't suck while you do it, all right?

In conclusion, I totally meant to go see Dark Shadows this weekend. Oops. Maybe I'll go Wednesday. Wednesday's a nice day to do fun stuff- it really livens up the week.

Oh! The fic-writing meme! Almost forgot. Okay, we have got: 7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character? )

lotus0kid: (Default)
Holy crap I need to adjust my crepe recipe. All my dinners since Sunday have been crepes. I'm not even sure I should've had the batter in the fridge for that long. After the inaugural Nutella and raspberry jelly, and two ground beef and onion and peas, I had one tuna and mayo and cheese, one fried egg (see Diagram 1), and I just tried out lemon curd and clementine slices (eh). I gotta get me some scones for that lemon curd. Nothing else will do.

Diagram 1 )

Also, I was going to run out and see Chronicle after work, but I decided to go for the other scifi film featuring troubled youths that Netflix sent, Attack the Block. I just finished it- that is one solid picture, I'd say. Worth all the praise I've seen for it.

Um, that's it, I guess. Crepe adventures, movies- yeah, that's all.
lotus0kid: (stunts)
So I guess I'm watching the Superbowl. Mostly because John Green is supposedly livetweeting it (the addiction continues apace). So far, cute commercial with players and cheerleaders going out and singing a verse of "Wind Beneath My Wings" to Regular Folks(tm) and a commercial for beard trimmers that had Adrien Brody- where has that guy been? I miss him so much.

But in other news, I'm finally making crepes again! It's been over a year because it took that long to use up the stupid "self-rising" flour I bought for cupcakes. But now I have the appropriate flour and all is well! I've made a Nutella and raspberry jelly crepe (breakfast!) and a ground beef and peas crepe (dinner!)... and I still have a bunch of batter left. Any suggestions? I have some lemon curd that's been left completely unopened in my fridge for.. quite a while actually. It.. uh, it was a housewarming gift. I think it's okay, it looks okay. Lemon curd and raspberry jelly? Lemon curd and clementine sections? Shame strawberries aren't in season.

Dude, it's hard to pay attention for the commercials. I'm trained not to. *sigh* Game hasn't started and I'm already bored.

ETA: One of the players (first typed "characters"- I sooo shouldn't be watching this) has the same last name as me. Weird.
lotus0kid: (HP/MST3K)
I had some leftover red bell pepper from my last cooking marathon, so I played mad chef a bit and cooked it up with diced onion, carrots, and chicken in olive oil, chucking in just for shits and giggles (more the latter than the former *crosses fingers*) oregano, garlic powder, some butter, and Lowry's salt (I pray at the altar of Lowry's salt, sprinkle it on a shoe and it'll taste good). I didn't measure anything, I just went for it. I mixed the whole mess in with egg noodles and the result is... well, still nothing that would've come out of my mom's kitchen, but not bad either! Honestly though, the idea of making a meal and just throwing in spices and stuff I liked and coming up with something tasty and interesting has always been kind of a dream of mine. I envy really good cooks the same way I do musicians.

Anyway, it was a long, frustrating, tiring day today, but it's almost over, I've got an episode of US Top Gear to check out whenever I feel like it, and tomorrow there is Rifftrax Live! Whooo! Jack the Giant Killer, which looks like someone trying to carry on the old Jason and the Argonauts style when that was still cutting-edge. It's really nice to have something special like Rifftrax Live right in the middle of the week, so rare that that happens. The day after I'm going to be enduring a seminar on payroll law... mostly for the brownie points and the possibility of going home early, but hey, especially considering what went down today, maybe I'll learn a thing or two. And then the day after that there's a comedy show sponsored by Planned Parenthood! Should be good times- I had no idea there was like an arts community maybe half an hour from my apartment. So, I've got a busy second half of a week, is what I'm saying.

Okay, I feel like US Top Gear now. Although, really, another "what's the toughest truck" challenge? Come on, guys. That other episode where you tested all of your first cars was great, I had never seen UK Top Gear do that! I don't need more friggin' trucks.
lotus0kid: (have a nice day)
Cookies. Cookies, man, cookies. Best thing in the world? Or BEST THING IN THE WORLD? These are the cookies my mom would make every Christmas. Eventually I got old enough to say, "I want them now," when it wasn't Christmas and make them myself. Honestly, I think I do them better than Mom these days. Though maybe not this batch, TBH. Needed a little more baking soda or something. Maybe my mixing action wasn't quite planetary enough. Anyway, wanna learn how to make 'em yourself?

Chocolate chip cookies with cinammon. VERY easy recipe. )

So, that's the cooking portion of the weekend done. As for the fic portion- well, one down, seven more to go. Again, any Plaude prompts would be appreciated.

For now I think I'm gonna go back to Hulu and watch some episodes of Being Human (US version) that I missed, and then listen to the commentaries that are on it, because Sam Witwer (Aidan- vampire), Sam Huntington (Josh- werewolf), and Meaghan Rath (Sally- ghost) are freaking adorable and hilarious human beings. I already heard the commentary for part one of the pilot, and wow, these guys. Just like all the best casts, I want them to adopt me. Or at least let me sit quietly in a corner and listen to them talk- which I can basically do, thanks to these commentaries. So, yay!
lotus0kid: (have a nice day)
Man, there is some kind of freaky snow/rain/ice thing going on outside right now and I am not happy about it. Stop. Seriously, stop it this instant.

Moving on, birthday season's gone all right. All told I've had three parties with three songs and three cakes (well, two strawberry shortcakes and a French silk pie). That's one party at the office, one at my dad's house, and one at my uncle's house (that last to celebrate my birthday, my grandfather's birthday, and my sister's birthday). My best present has been the big KitchenAid mixer my mom and stepdad got me. I've been wanting to make my chocolate-chip cookies (it's kind of how I christen new kitchens), but really lacked the equipment. Now I've got this magnificent bastard- the box says it's got "unique planetary mixing action." I have no idea what that means but it sounds awesome.

Otherwise, I've gotten some fun stuff for myself:
1. Rare Bird Alert by Steve Martin (yeah, that Steve Martin) & the Steep Canyon Rangers. Really cool bluegrass album with fabulous violins, banjoes (banjos?), bass, and harmonies. Here, have Women Like to Slow Dance, it's fun on a bun.
2. Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell. I've wanted to check out one of her books for a while now, seems like she has that same wry voice and taste for the absurd that Mary Roach has which I love and really demand from my nonfiction books.
3. MST3K Volume XX. The special twentieth anniversary collection- Amazon's got it nicely discounted, so I figured what the heck. It should arrive in a couple of days. :D

I'm really dying to go see Paul sometime this weekend, however my mom, sister, and baby nephew will be dropping in on Saturday and staying until my sister and nephew's flight on Sunday. Yeah, ten-month-old baby crawling around my apartment for at least a twenty-four hour period. That's gonna go great.

And now, I can either watch The Daily Show, The Rachel Maddow Show, and/or Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] zombres, I think this link'll work!), or I can write. Place your bets now.
lotus0kid: (tyler b&w)
Made another really good chili tonight. And this time I have pictures! And I even figured out how to make them not so embarrassingly huge!

the pictures in question + the ridiculously simple recipe for the curious )

Makes... a bunch, I dunno. I make this when I need something to eat for most of a week. It's super good, and is also one of those meals that gets better with time as all the flavors sink together. I'm going back for another bowl. :D
lotus0kid: (kinda cool)
Cross your fingers for me, folks. My very first meatloaf is sizzling away in the oven right now, but unfortunately I don't really know what temperature my oven is set to. Because it's also the first time I've used my oven and some genius messed with the temperature dial so it doesn't read right. So, as of now I'm just kind of babysitting it. I hope the temperature is hotter than it should be, because A) the meatloaf will be done faster and B) I just think I'll be able to tell more easily how done it is. It's looking browner than before, and there's the aforementioned sizzling going on, and it smells pretty tasty. So that's good, right? *runs to check it again* A little browner, a little more sizzling, more or less the same smell.

In other news! Yesterday, apropos to mostly nothing except boredom and hearing about it so much I guess it seeped into my unconscious, I started watching Misfits. I'm all caught up now. *runs to check meatloaf* *runs back to cut for spoilers* )

*checks meatloaf: status report- looks about done through (smoke alarm just went off, I turned on the stove fan and pressed the button on the alarm and it stopped) but a little mushy so I'll let it go a while longer* I don't really like having the fan on. I can't hear the sizzle this way which was helping me keep an eye on it.

All right, took it out.

Looks okay... )

Well, I'm hungry anyway. Once again, as long as I don't poison myself, it's a win! I better go get my mashed potatoes and peas done before it gets cold.

ETA: Damn, I just realized I forgot to put ketchup on it halfway through like you're supposed to. Nuts.

ETA2: Not bad! Maybe next time go a little lighter on the oregano, add a little salt, remember the ketchup. And, y'know, let my landlady know the dial on my oven is somewhat borked.
lotus0kid: (stunts)
Aw nuts. I made beef stew yesterday, and it came out fine. Great, even. As you can see here:

I'm embarrassed by how big these pictures are! )

In other news, my dad and stepmom got me an amaryllis plant as a housewarming gift a while ago, and it's finally all bloomed! See?

Nice bit of summer in the dead of winter. )
lotus0kid: (creative process)
Man, I am so not hungry it's not even funny. I got Panera for lunch and, well, are you familiar with the phrase "food baby?" Yeah. I was at least five months along after that meal. Though I will never regret the amazing baked potato soup they serve on Wednesdays. Anyway, it's unfortunate that that meal stole my attention from dinner, because I made my mom's chicken and rice casserole, and once again it turned out- and I definitely don't use this word lightly in regards to my cooking- perfect. Here, lemme give you the recipe, because it's delicious as well as fairly easy to make.

Chicken & Rice Casserole (plus pictures) )

P.S. I have no idea what the nutritional content of this dish is. My feeling is that anything that tastes this good can't be too good for you. But oh well!
lotus0kid: (5 seconds)
Well, I wouldn't declare it an out-right and total success, but, once again, they're edible, even tasty, and I've yet to double over in digestive agony from the one I ate.

What I Learned From All This + pictures )

P.S. An update on the surprise cat from last week. )
lotus0kid: (Happy halloween from the party skull!)
Arrrgh this is starting to piss me off. Anybody remember a little bit ago me complaining about my stupid iPhone reading each file in my fanmix folders as a separate album, so I can't listen to, say, all of Modern Day Wooster or Lovenado, just one song at a time? I figured this was because the files were spread out into folders based on band/musician, so I went through and made folders for each album, got them all organized where they belong, and STILL on my phone's library there's a long line of albums with the same name and cover art and ONE track each. Except for My Love is Like a Spaceship actually, it worked for that more or less, but that's really more frustrating than encouraging because there's nothing at all different about that one than the others and GAH. My last idea is to make separate playlists out of all of them, but I really don't want to do that. Maybe I could make one big playlist of fanmixes, but then I'd never be able to shuffle just one album, should I wish to.

Anyway, I had more to talk about than just bemoaning my continuing disappointment in technology. While I was doing the thirty-day meme, I collected more memes! Oh yes! I'm still sitting on a couple big ones, but today's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 caught my eye this morning:

Which 5 persons from any fandom would you place on a lonely island to get the most interesting reaction?

I decided my island would be populated by the most Machiavellian, corkscrew-brained, devious, manipulative, calculating, self-serving characters I could find- and a wild card. Slight spoilers for Dollhouse. )

I'm really getting into the Halloween spirit now. Quite unconsciously, after I finished re-reading Soon I Will Be Invincible, I started re-reading Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. While I don't really like the implication that cadaver research should be linked with Halloween and all that, I'll admit it's hard not to at least a little, especially considering I've got I Sell the Dead coming in from Netflix tomorrow. After that it's Trick 'r Treat (highly recommended by the Adams of A Damn Movie Podcast), Day of the Dead, Rosemary's Baby, The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror, and Dog Soldiers. That last one, if you haven't seen it, definitely do- it's awesome, British, and does a very cool thing with the "trapped in a house surrounded by [supernatural being(s)]" trope more often seen in zombie movies.

Also, in actual physical activity, tomorrow I'm going to attempt the blood clot and brain cupcakes I came across- was it last year? [livejournal.com profile] zombres, did you link to that? Anyway, I was going to try it this afternoon, but I was tired from work (another day at the equipment yard- wheee I need to take a shower), and had to run out twice for the ingredients, and by the time I was ready to get started, I was also really hungry and just not into it enough. So, tomorrow morning it shall be! I'm kind of nervous about it- I've never even made cupcakes before, let alone ones with strawberry filling and buttercream icing. Anyway, this will be mostly a trial run- the recipe only makes eight cupcakes, so if they suck, at least I won't feel too bad throwing them away. And if they rock, hopefully they won't take too long to make, so I can whip some more up for other things. Like certain rallies, or carousing-type events. (@#!$%#@$^, I just realized I forgot to get the little tube thing to squeeze out the icing! *groans* Well, I've already done one Walk of Shame [or at least Overeager Baker Who Doesn't Check Her Supplies List to Make Sure She Has Everything Even After the Scare with the Little Paper Cupcake Holders] to the grocery store, I can do another tomorrow. They better friggin' have it, though.)

Also also, on Sunday [livejournal.com profile] fadeintodawn and I will bundle up for an outdoor version of Titus Andronicus. The local Shakespeare company does their shows in the ruins of an old girls school up in the hills of the historical part of town that have been semi-restored. For this one scenes will take place all over the ruins, not just on the stage that's set up in one area. So, that'll be neat. I've never seen the entire play, just clips of the Julie Taymor film version. Actually, I always think it's a good idea to read the summary of a Shakespeare play before going to see it just so even if the dialogue loses you you still know what's going on, so I read the one for Titus and oh my god! Jeepers, Shakespeare! If you think Hamlet/Othello/Macbeth/King Lear are bloodbaths, you have clearly not taken a glimpse of Titus Andronicus. All those other plays are goddamn dainty compared to it! I'm honestly a little nervous in a way. I mean, I don't know how far they're going to take it. Some of the stuff that happens in Titus is.. not easy to watch for anyone. I can handle gore pretty well, at least with a TV screen between me and it, but that screen won't be there this time. And there's more than gore. Oh well, you know, I know they set the audience age limit at fifteen (as in, fifteen and up), so, I kind of think that indicates they won't be taking it really far.

Day 28 - A song that gives you shivers )

The shepherd's pie went pretty well, it's maybe a little bland, but entirely edible. The picture I took came out fairly crappy though, so, just in case anyone really wanted to take a look at it, sorry. The shopping went poorly, in that while I found stuff that would work, I'm going to have to take most of it back tomorrow. Oh well, I've got an outfit pretty much hammered out, and that's the important thing.

Day 27 - A song you've listened to after a break-up )

As for my weekend, my cousin's getting married in a week so I'll be running around getting a haircut and putting an outfit together (my aunt's letting me borrow a nice dark brown dress, so I'm aiming for shoes that match and.. I dunno, a shawl of some type, I guess). I also think I might attempt shepherd's pie tomorrow evening. My boss has a recipe she swears by using ground lamb seasoned with sage, thyme, and.. something else. Crap. Well, definitely not crap, but, dang what was that third thing? Anyway, for now it's Ladyhawke on the Instant Play and Fringe on Hulu. Mmm, Friday. ^^
lotus0kid: (Default)
Mmm, I love chili. Easy to make, and always so tasty. And I remembered cheese this time! And beans. Bit by bit, my simple little chili is becoming more complex, like a new organic lifeform through the generations. Anyway, I hope anyone reading this also read and enjoyed the big ol' fic hanging out below. I don't usually post fics that big on my own journal- well, I don't usually write fics that big. I feel kind of awkward having it all there.

Day 24 - A song that you want to play at your funeral )

Yarr, I be in the midst o' makin' a fine beef stew fer the enjoyment o' me and the crew, and a lengthy simmerin' time gives me leave ta' be gettin' on with my lj duties on this most lovely of Talk Like a Pirate Days.

Day 15 - A song that describes you )

Aside from the day's musical offerin', me reunion with yon wondrous Photoshop has brought about the creation of a small brood o' icons fer the most honorable and ship-shape o' television programs, Sherrrlock. Should one 'r more catch yer fancy, do be obliged to plunder at will, but let it be known the makerrr o' the piece, or face the edge o' my blade presently.

Day 13 - A song that is a guilty pleasure )

Anyway, somebody name a character whose first/last/nickname starts with the letter X. I need it for a thing. And it can't be Xander from Buffy.

Should be a relaxing weekend for me. I don't have many plans beyond purchasing a copy of Photoshop and attempting something for the latest super cool [livejournal.com profile] picspammy challenge. I have a Plaude Bingo idea I could work on, but.. I kind of need to be in the right mood for it- we'll see if that manifests later on. The plans for attempting beef stew remain fluid, and have been bolstered by another successful chili.
lotus0kid: (5 seconds)
Ah, well, had a great time down at the gay rights rally in DC. It was muggy and humid as hell, but it didn't rain, and since we were standing in an open area for about three hours, I was actually happy for the clouds because straight sunshine would've been brutal. It wasn't a huge event, but there were a lot of really great speakers and it's always nice to see people supporting a more than worthy cause. I made a sign to wave around, based on an icon I saw on some post or another: picture and icon )

I've got some stuff to do tomorrow morning. blah blah job stuff whining blah )

Anyway, other things. Saw Scott Pilgrim, which was.. a visual spectacle, if nothing else. Kind of made the world seem flat and pale when I left the theater. )

I've had more luck with Netflix stuff. Lo and Secretary )

After the movie I came home and attempted to make a coconut stir-fry with shrimp and egg noodles. Recipe from the Student cookbook. )

Also, one of those fic-praise memes, yeah. Validate me?

the that's my favorite! meme
lotus0kid: (Default)
Well, I'm going to venture out today and do my best to get the dang 4.0 software taken off my iPhone. The only thing I've appreciated about it since I downloaded it is the improved camera function, and that's not nearly enough to make up for the glaring flaws. So, anyway, to celebrate its demise mark its passing, yesterday I tromped out into the woods behind where I'm living to take some photos.

They're not as sharply focused as I'd like, but some came out okay. )

P.S. The crepe was not a fluke (which sounds like spy code for something). Yesterday I tried Nutella and banana at breakfast (strawberries and cream cheese for my aunt), and also a kind of tuna melt crepe for lunch (possibly my favorite so far). Once I'm done here, I'm going for peaches and brown sugar.
