Another New Year's Eve, another Firefly marathon. This is dangerously close to becoming a tradition. Well, I say marathon, really just the episodes my mom didn't catch on Thanksgiving, and maybe Serenity. Still, eeee... XD

P.S. Happy new year, folks! Let's all get together and hope really hard for a good 2012.
lotus0kid: (have a nice day)
Ah, that's Christmas taken care of. Very quiet this year, no one seemed up for a big fuss. As for gifts, I finally own both seasons of Pushing Daisies, and I finally own the Firefly graphic novel that tells the story of the mysterious Shepherd Book (though since I haven't read the first Firefly graphic novel despite owning it for years because then it will be over, you guys, we'll see when I get around to this). Otherwise, I have some new tech to program and I might actually turn a profit between getting money as gifts and spending it on gifts (and groceries and rent). Also, I got Death Comes to Pemberley from both sides of the family, which was surprising since that was the first (and second) time I'd ever heard of it. Looks good though- always nice to see professional fanfiction out in the world.

Today I'm indulging in the Top Gear Top 40 Challenges marathon, and then most likely more Pushing Daisies (I'm on the third disc of the first season). And probably more Grimm fic, because I have a problem. Mmm, holidays.

Shiny!

lotus0kid: (Firefly/MST3K)
Eeee, I've finally gotten my mom to sit down and watch Firefly! We're about to watch our fifth episode! I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure at one point she referred to Simon as "My doctor." D'aww!
lotus0kid: (cool cool cool)
Dangit, I want to go to bed at ten like a good girl, but things keep being on! Monday it was Alphas (still deciding on that one), Tuesday it was Cover Affairs (meh), and today I discovered Deadliest Warrior's new season is premiering. Come on, Washington vs. Bonaparte! You know you want to find out who would win that fight. And hey, on the credits sequence, I think I spotted a real live lady! Wooo! Never seen one of them on this show!

Anyway, how about a nice traditional meme:

Give me a pairing and I'll tell you:

1. When or if I started shipping them:
2. What I think their challenge is:
3. What makes me happy about them:
4. What makes me sad about them:
5. What moment I wish had never happened:
6. Who I'd be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
7. My happily ever after for them:

ETA: Double dangit! US Top Gear premieres at ten next Sunday. Noooo! And yaaay!
lotus0kid: (city)
From [livejournal.com profile] memeseveriwhere:

List your top ten (10) favorite characters from a single anime fandom (whoops, didn't read that quite closely enough), and answer the following questions.

(You know what? I'm gonna go with multiple fandoms. It's more fun that way.)
1 - The Middleman
2 - Mal Reynolds
3 - Elizabeth Burke
4 - Claude Rains
5 - Veronica Palmer
6 - Granny Weatherwax
7 - Michael Weston
8 - Olivia Dunham
9 - Amy Pond
10 - Sherlock Holmes

Some weird stuff under this cut, my friends. )
lotus0kid: (only love)
It's been ages since I did one of these... From [livejournal.com profile] fannish5:

Name your 5 favorite fictional marriages.

I tried to go for couples that were together before and during their respective canons. )

It was way easier to come up with my second list: my favorite heterosexual life partners. )

So begins the cooking/writing weekend. With me doing a [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 meme, instead of writing a fic or cooking dinner. Oops. Anyway, I've got another thing I'm looking forward to in the next couple days besides stew and cookies and hopefully some fics- USA is airing its feature-length film all about the backstory of Sam Axe from Burn Notice on Sunday! Bruce Campbell is starring in his own made-for-TV movie, and not one of those stinky scifi affairs I'm sure he's done a few of! I'm so happy for him. *tear*
lotus0kid: (Default)
Well, [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket, I'm afraid I'm going to have to cheat on my unwritten advent calendar rules and start your offering today. I just wasn't expecting to come up with such an awesome and undoubtedly multi-chapter idea, and it was really kind of nuts to think I could write it all during the run-up to Christmas. But! In any case, the research is done, at least, notes written, Ghosts decided. It's gonna be great.

Anyway, I finally got my books on the shelf, so how about some new apartment pics?

Please ignore the sun going supernova in a couple of them. It does that sometimes. Also, fair warning, these pictures are huge- be prepared. )

Also, something fun from [livejournal.com profile] fannish5: Name five fictional families that you would like to spend time with.

Only two characters on this list are biologically related. But then, found families are the best. )

So, Christmas. Got a couple more gift cards and a regular card to run out and grab before I head out to my dad's at 3:30 or so- I can probably get them from the grocery store, so I'm not in a big rush. Then tomorrow it's my mom's side of the family in the evening. Here's hoping that bad weather doesn't make things too difficult.
lotus0kid: (creative process)
Wow, I managed not to do a meme for over a month! Not that I was really trying not to- quite the opposite, actually, but still! Sometimes I get annoyed with myself, like I don't have anything to talk about, all I want to do is play silly lj games. But can I help it when they're so fun and interesting so often? No.

Anyway! From, most recently, [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket:

1.) Comment to this and I will give you 3 fictional characters.
2.) Decide of the 3 whom you would marry, do, and dump cliff.
3.) Post this meme to your journal with your answers.

DON'T JUDGE ME. )

Two for the price of one! I did this whole meme once a while ago, but it accidentally got deleted, so I half-way did it again later, but, well, it's really one of those memes that demand... I dunno, immediacy. It gets stale if you leave it alone and then you have to start all over. Anyway, for the third and final time, here's this, stolen aaages ago from [livejournal.com profile] hermione_vader:

1. Write down 20 of your favorite OTPs
2. Put your media player on shuffle. The number of the song corresponds to the number of the OTPs.
3. Quote a part of the song that you think has any similarity with the story of the couple.
4. Comment.

Some of them were so far off I had to try again. Some were so spot-on it was scary. )

Man, what is better than a beautiful lazy Saturday morning after a long week of work and various running around? I've had my scrambled eggs, my bagel (half margarine, half Nutella- yummm), and now I've got a cup of the fantastic jasmine tea my sister sent up from Florida. I've got all three Sherlock episodes queued up for viewing, and I haven't quite decided if I'm going to attempt a beef stew today. Hm. Also, I finally caved and bought six months of paid lj time. So, uh, yay extra icons? Heh, that was really all I was interested in. I dunno, maybe I'll fiddle around with my layout.

Anyway, my creepy lj-lurking has found me a meme!

List the first five OTPs that come into your head.
1. Peter/Claude
2. Maj. West/Mirror!Wendy
3. Wash/Zoe
4. Alice/Hatter
5. Shawn/Lassiter

And answer some questions... )
lotus0kid: (Default)
(Ooh, the sky's doing that thing you only see in summer when everything gets tinged a really cool shade of pink/yellow/green. I love that.)

So, had a meeting with one of those temp agency guys today. We'll see if anything comes of that. I think it might, since I have a somewhat decent amount of experience now. The guy seemed fairly enthusiastic. Tomorrow I will definitely start looking at GRE study materials. I've been horrifically lazy to let it go this long. I will also go to the grocery store and buy actual ingredients for things. What things, I'm not sure, but I will.

Some feral anti-virus program has latched onto my computer. It keeps popping up with "ZOMFG YOU'VE BEEN INFECTED REGISTER NOW" messages that I'm really hoping will stop if I click "GO AWAY, FFS" enough. For now I've just got my Task Manager up to zap the messages that way.

I don't normally stay up for it- so much easier to dash over to the website to see the latest episode- but I do want to see if The Daily Show has anything cool to say about the awesome news on Prop 8.

Hm, I wanted to have more fun things to talk about, but.. yeah. Oh hey, Rifftrax is doing another live show on the nineteenth! Reefer Madness, the colorized version. So, yeah, that'll be cool. Also, completely at random today while I was working on cover art for a song mix I'm putting together, I found "Shalala" by Martin McFaul. It's a pretty darn cool song you can go here to download. If his whole album is like that, I might not be able to resist buying it.

*sigh* I shouldn't, since it will probably interfere with those grandiose GRE and grocery plans I have for tomorrow, but my fic-writing brain feels like it's been stagnating since finishing the bigboom fic, so...

Give me a prompt for a five-sentence fic.

Thanks kindly! Now I gotta run and see if the TV's free for Burn Notice.

ETA: Name your five favorite evil characters. Heh, I see what you did there, fannish5. No spoilers. )
lotus0kid: (Default)
*sigh* So, looks like if I want to listen to music in the car through my iPhone, I'm going to have to get this update taken off somehow. How can I do that? Dunno. Can I do that? Dunno. Will I also have to take the update off my iTunes account, and if so how would I do that? Double dunno. If I do, will a message from iTunes saying there's an update available pop up every time I plug it into my laptop? Seems likely. But will I be able to charge my iPhone from places other than my laptop or the wall socket? Yes. Will I be able to once again use the alarm clock radio that's only two years old? Double yes.

Oy. You know, I was really hoping it wasn't wishful thinking to suppose that Apple would consult with the companies that make accessories for its products before releasing a big update that makes those accessories incompatible with those products, but... yeah. Boy the world is stupid place sometimes.

Anyway, moving on. Now that the bigboom fic is finished, I get to do a couple memes! Oh memes, how I missed you!

Name the five sweetest fictional characters.

Some folks that make me go 'd'awww.' Also, a spoiler for Lost. )

And an audience-participation meme:

Choose one of my stories and I will do a commentary on it.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] fadeintodawn and I are going to see The Swell Season tomorrow night! For those who don't know, that's the band in the movie Once. I'm pretty jazzed about it. Should be a good time. And it'll be my first concert since Virgin Fest back in, like, 2006. I've never even been to a concert with just one band before (or I guess two if there's an opening act), unless you count the time I saw Governor Martin O'Malley perform with his band back when he was mayor of Baltimore. I don't think that counts when you don't even know the performer is going to be there.

Reeeaal quick, before I run off to work, I gotta tell you about this crazy fandom-y dream I had. It was like the first episode of Bones after this season finale, but with splashes of Eureka, Lost, and Firefly. I saw the last five minutes of the season finale, so I know that *slaps hand over mouth* mrf mrrrmmm mrf mfff mmrrm mf mm ). So in this dream, it was whatever dig Brennan was on in the jungle. But there was some kind of demon thing running around, and it caused this HUGE explosion that Brennan and Kaylee(?) got caught up in. Yeah, Kaylee was there because I think Simon was on the dig somehow. He'd run away from Serenity (and through time, what?), and she was trying to find him. They had a really adorable moment when she came back to consciousness, and said something about knowing he didn't get involved with anyone else- and then Simon starts yammering on about a guy in Copenhagen or somewhere (Stockholm?) who wanted Simon to live with him. That makes me somewhat proud, because that is EXACTLY what Simon would do in that situation.

Anyway, the jungle demon thing was able to change into different people, much like Lost's Smokey, though I don't think it had a smoke form, so it was also kind of like Buffy's First Evil. I remember it turned into Lost's Mr. Eko for a bit, and there was also a part near the end where Brennan and Booth were trying to kill the monster and it turned into Taggert from Eureka and started making fun of them for holding their guns wrong. Naturally, I woke up before the end, so I have no idea what happened.

Also, Fringe had a season finale. *slaps hand over mouth* mrf mrrrmmm mrf mfff mmrrm mf mm... )

Argh, and now I have to run to work *sigh*, but happy, happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket! Have a wonderful one, and hopefully I can see my way to a proper present when I get home!
lotus0kid: (verbs or adjectives)
You know, I don't think it's possible to write a fic without any "backstory" as the meme describes it. What on earth can the characters talk about if you don't give them something to do?

Title: The Petrelli Heist

All right, let's see a demonstration, then. )

That makes you S. Tam, right? )
lotus0kid: (5 seconds)
I'm watching about six very adorable deer eat corn out of the container my stepdad likes to put out in the backyard. He entertains dreams of hand-feeding them one day. All I can think is that those same deer are going to make a mess of the garden in a few weeks.

Anyway, I've gotten a good group of questions for my fifteen characters meme, so here are my answers. They come in the following categories: funny, interesting, and OW MY BRAIN.

rionaleonhart's questions )

visiblemarket's questions )

englishmuffin2's questions )

I've been on Twitter sporadically for work purposes over the last week or so. I'm not a fan. I don't really understand how it works, and more than that I don't like how it plays into our collective laziness and self-absorption. For example, one page had a single entry, which read "can't sleep". Yeah. Going through random Twitter pages (again, for work purposes) is like spending thirty seconds in the most boring part of a stranger's day.

HOWEVER.

When Twitter lets me witness something like this:

I'm calling you out @NathanFillion. Your spaceship vs my spaceship. Last one to the crab nebula gets the beers in. Spacedock, 1 hour.

Yo, @simonpegg, be reasonable! My ship was a filming set, while the Enterprise is obviously real. Perhaps a drinking contest?

Well, that makes up for a whole mess of sins.

Bonus:
From Nathan Fillion's Twitter page: "I like falling asleep in the make up chair because I wake up better looking."
From Simon Pegg's Twitter page: "It's Friday and today I get to work with Tim Curry. You see me shiver with anticip ... ation!"

*happy sigh* You see why these guys are two of my favorite people?

Anyway, on the less fangirly side of things, people are coming to replace the carpet on a good portion of my folks' house. So that means this weekend will be spent really and truly dismantling my room for what really has to be the last time. *sad sigh*
lotus0kid: (Default)
Hey, folks, what's up? Not too much for me- I'm overbooked on memes and fic, busy at work- but I've seen some cool things since my last post- or rather, [livejournal.com profile] zombres has shown me some cool things, and I feel like sharing.

Check this out. The climax of the radio play War of the Worlds done in typography:

How cool is that? ... Okay, maybe not that cool, but I like it. Here are other movie moments done in typography, if you're interested. Iron Man and V for Vendetta are a couple other pretty great ones.

Also, normally I prefer not to speculate on the early/private lives of famous people, but a lot of these photos are really worth taking a look at. They're pretty remarkable, if only for a few in a "Wow, I had no idea those two/more people ever existed in the same place long enough to have their picture taken" kind of way.

Okay, I better get at least one of the memes I've signed up for out of the way:

Icon meme RULES:
1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee. Whoo!

I've been thinking of overhauling my icons, but I know I'd just miss the ones I have too much )
lotus0kid: (rawk)
My calendar and DVD came! Yay! All... well, more is right with the world. Now I'm just wondering about my Microsoft Office software. Would've expected that to get here real quick. Anyway, reviving a meme, because it's a very fun one:

- Write a list of characters and number them.
- Input the number of characters into this random number generator as the maximum and generate two numbers.
- Ramble about how the corresponding pairing/partnership/general interaction would (or, indeed, wouldn't) work. Perhaps write a snippet/one-sentence fic for it if you're feeling brave.
- Repeat to your heart's content.

Fandoms represented: Middleman, Firefly, Discworld, White Collar, Dollhouse, Burn Notice, Doctor Who, Psych, Hot Fuzz, Jeeves & Wooster, and Heroes )
lotus0kid: (HP/MST3K)
Ahh, happy Friday, everyone! Boy I'm glad to have a nice, normal weekend, you know? Holidays are great, but two weekends in a row is a bit much. Anyway, I'm thinking I might go (duh duh duuuh) laptop shopping tomorrow. For serious this time, I know I've been complaining about my elderly computer for like... wow, like a year, yeah. Okay then. And this is the best time, while I've made some money and don't have too many bills to pay. Because on the list of major purchases, right after the laptop is the apartment. Right.

Distraction! A [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 contribution:
Name five characters who should have their own spinoffs.

tough not to fill this with Heroes' lost gems... )

P.S. [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket, let me know what theater you want to go to on Sunday, if you're feeling up to Sherlock, 'kay?

Hey, kids!

Nov. 6th, 2009 06:54 am
lotus0kid: (9&Rose)
In about thirteen minutes I'll be headed to work, then headed to the metro to pick up a friend, headed home, headed to another friend's house for the night, then headed to the bus station, and then headed to NEW YORK CITY, BABY! Let me know if some crazy shenanigans are gotten up to between now and Sunday afternoon.

Also, drive-by meme from [livejournal.com profile] fannish5: Name 5 characters whose wardrobe you would love to have.

1. Chuck from Pushing Daisies. OMG I don't even like dresses and I want so many of hers.
2. Kaylee from Firefly. Wheee, jumpsuits!
3. Inara Serra from Firefly. For when I'm tired of jumpsuits.
4. Eleanor Zissou from The Life Aquatic. In the same vein as #3, you can just tell she has closets full of amazing clothes.
5. Olivia Dunham from Fringe. A fandom!secret I'll never make: Olivia Dunham is my suit-spiration.

I'm still available for prompts, if anyone's got one. I have fully-formed ideas for the three I've gotten, just need a moment to write them. Don't know when that moment will come.
lotus0kid: (kinda cool)
Swinging in before I give myself over to submission-reading. I've been a complete lump and haven't read a single one since Saturday *winces*. Whatever, I totally will tonight when I'm not watching Mythbusters. I'll even stay up until eleven if I don't get enough done. And I'll read more tomorrow. Yes.

Anyway, the reason for the swinging in: remixes are up and done! Yay!

The lovely remixes I received:
Since I Found Serenity (The Dysdaimonia Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] joking- Firefly, Jayne-centric
They Sold You On Their Way (The Bridezilla Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] amathela- Heroes, pre-series D.L/Niki

The remixes I wrote:
M.I.A. (The Rule-Breaker Remix) for [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket- Plaude S1 pre-slash
Feeling Pretty Psyched (The Zompocalypse Remix) for [livejournal.com profile] melodyunity- Psych gen featuring Shawn, Gus, and Henry
Directions (The Overseas Aid Remix) for [livejournal.com profile] 2ndary_author- Firefly pre-series not quite!Zoe/Wash
Unmentionables (The Birthday Girl Remix) for [livejournal.com profile] little_missmimi- Firefly unrequited Inara/Kaylee

Annnd I'm off!
