lotus0kid: (Yes.)
You know what I realized yesterday? I have, quietly and without conscious thought, over the course of many years, been constructing a Ninth Doctor costume. In chronological order:

1. I got a black leather jacket, years ago, possibly some time during college but maybe even in high school. Maybe in between. I don't wear it hardly ever, because it's fancy and I'm scared I'll hurt it. But it's pretty awesome, very soft. Not strictly Ninth Doctor-y in the details, but still, it's a black leather jacket.
2. I got black jeans several months ago. Skinny jeans, I must admit. I know, staple of the basic hipster uniform, but these have worked out great so far. Except for the gold stitching, which makes them much harder to find matching tops for.
3. I got black combat boots a month or so ago. Look, they were less than $50, okay? And they were in my size, and basically comfortable, and sometimes I like to pretend I'm cool like that, so there.
4. I got a V-neck sweater something like a month or so ago. I'm not actually sure if I got the boots or the sweater first. Anyway, it's red, brighter than I'd like if I had been doing any of this consciously, but whatever. It looks good, especially with the pants and jacket.

The only thing I was missing (besides a buzz-cut, I guess) was a sonic screwdriver... )

So, looks like a change of wardrobe for the Nerdist Live Show I'm going to next weekend. Not sure when I'll be able to bust out the DW/MST3K mash-up T-shirt and/or bow tie, but I'll think of something. And of course, this all hinges on the show actually happening, and I just got an e-mail saying it's been postponed. Fantastic.
lotus0kid: (5 seconds)
The new Discworld book Snuff came in the mail yesterday! Yeee! I was pretty surprised when I got the e-mail that it had shipped, and then again when it arrived. Sadly, I think I was unconsciously disconnecting from it emotionally a bit, since... you know. Anyway, I'm plowing through The Last Werewolf now (quite enjoying it), and I've also picked up Joshua Foer's Moonwalking with Einstein, which is a non-fiction book about memory. And to round out the short list I've decided I want to re-read Jane Eyre sometime soon. I don't think I've actually sat down and gone through it since the one time in high school. Otherwise, I'm toying with the idea of going to the library and finding a genuine scary book for the month. I'm leaning towards Silence of the Lambs. Any suggestions?

In the meantime, I've been catching up on Parks and Rec because of.. reasons. Because Netflix Instant is evil, basically. In any case, I'm enjoying that too, though now my brain has cast Rashida Jones as a character in The Last Werewolf kind of against my will. Not that there's anything wrong with her, but she just doesn't quite fit so I keep getting distracted trying to replace her.

Today, though, I wasn't really thinking about Discworld, or Parks and Rec. I was mostly thinking about these and how cool it would be to get a tattoo of one of them. Peace in particular. Yeah, I'm so not the body modification type, but... these are so COOL! I love the idea of a language based on circles, among a dozen OTHER things I love about Doctor Who, things that I could use reminding of from time to time, up to and including curiosity and empathy and the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism. Seriously, if I'm still thinking about this come, say, next spring... might make it a birthday present to myself. Any advice from inked friends would be welcomed. ^^

BAM! )

In other news, the family weekend was very long, and involved going to a museum I had been to a week and a day earlier, but I survived, and even eeked out a little time on Sunday night for Downton Abbey and the DW finale. In regards to the latter, I'm... moderately satisfied, and that's all I'll say outside a cut. )

Speaking of mysteries, I discovered one of my own today. At work I have a calendar and mostly what's on it are TV shows and/or movie premieres I want to watch because I'm a huge dork. Mostly I just use initials, like "W.D. 9pm" for the Walking Dead premiere on October 16th. However, today I noticed that on Thursday, November 3rd, I'd written "P.U.V." and I honestly have no idea what it's supposed to mean. It must be important- I don't add things to the calendar unless I really want to see them. But no matter how much I wrack my brain, I can't remember what P.U.V. is supposed to stand for. I don't think a Google search would help much with only the initials and the date to go on... Nope, just tried it, nothing. I'm flummoxed.

So, anyway, onward to this evening. I'm finally going to see the latest Jane Eyre with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. [livejournal.com profile] zombres, I'm with you- Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens will always be my Jane and Rochester, but I'm still curious about this version.

ETA: Well, just finished it. It's very pretty, and I really might look up the soundtrack, but... Well, obviously I've been spoiled by the Masterpiece Theatre Jane Eyre. A two-hour movie is not going to compare to a four-hour miniseries. But that said... I dunno, I think maybe they were so hung up on atmosphere, the actual characters and their interactions came a distant second. One of the things I absolutely adore about the MT Jane Eyre is how Jane and Rochester make each other laugh. They tease and banter back and forth and it's obvious they're more comfortable with each other than anyone else. With this, you don't really get hardly any of that. Suddenly, it's the proposal scene and Rochester's all "We've become good friends, haven't we?" and I'm sitting there like, "Uh, when was that? I must've missed it." And I can't blame it entirely on plot-compression. I really think they could have worked in more than they did. So, I think I'll keep my two discs of the MT version and send this back to Netflix.
lotus0kid: (nerd it up)
Got a big family weekend coming up (I typed "family movie" at first- there's something wrong with me; also, whoa! The font's different in the box.. where you type... the entry thing.), my sister's up from Florida and there's this big get-together Saturday for my maternal grandmother's eightieth birthday. We're going to a German restaurant, which I'm excited about because there's a rabbit dish on the menu I'd really like to try, /shameless carnivore. So, that's the good news. On the bad side, it looks pretty likely I'm going to miss the Doctor Who season finale I've been waiting to see for... how many months? When did this brutally long season start? My memory doesn't go back that far. Even if I do make it home before 9pm, my mom and my sister will be staying with me, and I'm cringing already at my mom's reaction to me saying I want to watch a TV show when I'm supposed to want to, I dunno, soul-bond with her and my sister.

However! More good news! I have finally received my very first gen-u-wine geeky T-shirt. I got it from redbubble, and it's pretty rad. And appropriate, considering the current tension between my fannish/familial duties!

lotus0kid: (friends & wonders)
Long, frustrating day at work, with my boss not there to answer the three dozen or so crucial questions that crop up as a matter of course on any given Monday in Payroll. It's especially tricky this week because of Labor Day- lots of unique arrangements of overtime and whatnot that she would know in a heartbeat but I have no idea how to handle. That said, the month/day/year end date of last week, which is a date I have to type in a lot as I enter all the info into our payroll software, well...

That's a winning hand. And a big picture. )

Anyway, can't hang around here. Got the last two Blackadder episodes to watch and almost definitely some chili to make.

ETA: LOL, the invisible character on Alphas is British! XDDD Oh, dude, I think it's Charlotte from Lost! Even better! I may actually have to get back into this show again.
lotus0kid: (dreamer)
Okay, I really tried to make a poster, but I got bored/annoyed with Photoshop and quit. On the plus side, I think I've figured out how to crop objects/people out of pictures. And there was something else, a button I found that will be useful. Can't remember what it did now. Dang. I'm always like that with Photoshop- I do something, and then I can't remember how I did it. I want to be like the cool kids and make awesome icons and fanmix covers, but I've got some kind of weird Photoshop learning disorder or something. It's annoying.

*sigh* Anyway, here you go [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket. I present to you the synopsis of Cackle Bladder (Revisited):

LOL, thanks, iTunes Shuffle )

Ahh. Now that meme's done, let's have another! From [livejournal.com profile] zombres:

+ I will (try my best to) write you at least one sentence of something vaguely resembling fiction based on said icon.

Honestly, though, I did recently find out that I was born and raised in the fifth richest county in the country. Ye-eah... *fidgets under mink coat of privilege*

Anywho, meme! From [livejournal.com profile] zombres:

List your top ten (10) favorite characters from a single anime fandom (whoops, didn't read that quite closely enough), and answer the following questions.

(You know what? I'm gonna go with multiple fandoms. It's more fun that way.)
1 - The Middleman
2 - Mal Reynolds
3 - Elizabeth Burke
4 - Claude Rains
5 - Veronica Palmer
6 - Granny Weatherwax
7 - Michael Weston
8 - Olivia Dunham
9 - Amy Pond
10 - Sherlock Holmes

Because I enjoy that kind of thing! Really, it was bad with my old car because I would get kind of distracted waiting for neat-looking numbers to come up on my odometer. Especially combinations of 2, 5, 6, and 9, because they're kind of mirror-y, see? Sure you do. I still remember the day it hit 012345, I was just arriving at a sushi place in Dover, Delaware with some friends. I might have called my brother to inform him of that momentous occasion. I can tell you what road I was on when it hit 1011, which is the number for a favorite radio station of mine back when I listened to the radio. I'm better about it now, the last cool number I spotted was 8888. I'm in the 9000s now, and haven't really remembered to look for a 2, 5, and 6 in any combination yet.

Anyway... well, that's about it, really. I watched all of Tin Man yesterday, mostly because it's going to fall off Instant soon. Meh, Alice is way better. Also, Zooey Deschanel, I really want to like you, you are very adorable to look at, but your acting... just... not so much.

Also, check out this nifty Doctor Who fan-made mash-up poster )

In conclusion, I feel like reviving a meme, so here goes:
Give me no less than two and no more than four characters from any of my fandoms, and I will write you up to six ficlets connecting them to each other somehow. (e.g.: 'Six Degrees of Separation from Walter Kovacs to Manservant Neville', 'Three Ways Kaylee Frye Doesn't Know She Knows Neal Caffrey', or 'From Ted Crisp to Claude Rains in Five Steps or Less'.) Obvious or not, your choice. Crossovers or not, your choice.

Now I need to go make dinner and listen to CAKE's new album Showroom of Compassion. I think both are going to be pretty good. Oh dang, I forgot to document on here my first ever completely home-cooked meal on my stove in my apartment. Oh well, it was chili, and it was awesome. Lasted me five days.
lotus0kid: (creative process)
Wow, I managed not to do a meme for over a month! Not that I was really trying not to- quite the opposite, actually, but still! Sometimes I get annoyed with myself, like I don't have anything to talk about, all I want to do is play silly lj games. But can I help it when they're so fun and interesting so often? No.

Anyway! From, most recently, [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket:

1.) Comment to this and I will give you 3 fictional characters.
2.) Decide of the 3 whom you would marry, do, and dump cliff.
3.) Post this meme to your journal with your answers.

Two for the price of one! I did this whole meme once a while ago, but it accidentally got deleted, so I half-way did it again later, but, well, it's really one of those memes that demand... I dunno, immediacy. It gets stale if you leave it alone and then you have to start all over. Anyway, for the third and final time, here's this, stolen aaages ago from [livejournal.com profile] hermione_vader:

1. Write down 20 of your favorite OTPs
2. Put your media player on shuffle. The number of the song corresponds to the number of the OTPs.
3. Quote a part of the song that you think has any similarity with the story of the couple.
4. Comment.

Some of them were so far off I had to try again. Some were so spot-on it was scary. )
lotus0kid: (lol)
*sigh* Naturally, my appointment for a physical with a new doctor falls on the day a tropical depression is set to dump about five inches of water on the mid-Atlantic region. Here's hoping it wears itself out overnight and the flood warnings stay just that.

Day 19 - A song from your favorite album )

As is usually the case, I just found out today that Bones and Fringe will be having their season premieres tonight. Seriously, that almost always happens- I never really know when my shows are coming back on, I just stumble across the information completely at random and I'm like, "Oh yeah, cool! Well, thank goodness I found out." I'm a bad fan. Anyway, Bones is going to have to work hard to keep my attention this season- I haven't even bothered to watch the entire finale from the last one. I'm way more excited about Fringe, for spoilery reasons. I'm crossing my fingers that a certain thing or two happens but not holding out much hope, as one should do with this kind of show.

Also, I've been hearing about the frustrating situation trying to get Don't Ask Don't Tell repealed. *sigh* Every day I get more saddened and angered by the state of equality in this country. And since I recently watched Kinsey, I'm especially riled up about people who treat sexual diversity as a crime instead of the perfectly natural aspect of humanity it is. So, if you have the time, please sign this letter to the Attorney General asking him not to appeal the federal court decision that DADT is unconstitutional. Thanks.

ETA: Awesome Old Spice!style Jack Harkness macro.

(Ooh, the sky's doing that thing you only see in summer when everything gets tinged a really cool shade of pink/yellow/green. I love that.)

So, had a meeting with one of those temp agency guys today. We'll see if anything comes of that. I think it might, since I have a somewhat decent amount of experience now. The guy seemed fairly enthusiastic. Tomorrow I will definitely start looking at GRE study materials. I've been horrifically lazy to let it go this long. I will also go to the grocery store and buy actual ingredients for things. What things, I'm not sure, but I will.

Some feral anti-virus program has latched onto my computer. It keeps popping up with "ZOMFG YOU'VE BEEN INFECTED REGISTER NOW" messages that I'm really hoping will stop if I click "GO AWAY, FFS" enough. For now I've just got my Task Manager up to zap the messages that way.

I don't normally stay up for it- so much easier to dash over to the website to see the latest episode- but I do want to see if The Daily Show has anything cool to say about the awesome news on Prop 8.

Hm, I wanted to have more fun things to talk about, but.. yeah. Oh hey, Rifftrax is doing another live show on the nineteenth! Reefer Madness, the colorized version. So, yeah, that'll be cool. Also, completely at random today while I was working on cover art for a song mix I'm putting together, I found "Shalala" by Martin McFaul. It's a pretty darn cool song you can go here to download. If his whole album is like that, I might not be able to resist buying it.

*sigh* I shouldn't, since it will probably interfere with those grandiose GRE and grocery plans I have for tomorrow, but my fic-writing brain feels like it's been stagnating since finishing the bigboom fic, so...

Give me a prompt for a five-sentence fic.

Thanks kindly! Now I gotta run and see if the TV's free for Burn Notice.

ETA: Name your five favorite evil characters. Heh, I see what you did there, fannish5. No spoilers. )

*sigh* So, looks like if I want to listen to music in the car through my iPhone, I'm going to have to get this update taken off somehow. How can I do that? Dunno. Can I do that? Dunno. Will I also have to take the update off my iTunes account, and if so how would I do that? Double dunno. If I do, will a message from iTunes saying there's an update available pop up every time I plug it into my laptop? Seems likely. But will I be able to charge my iPhone from places other than my laptop or the wall socket? Yes. Will I be able to once again use the alarm clock radio that's only two years old? Double yes.

Oy. You know, I was really hoping it wasn't wishful thinking to suppose that Apple would consult with the companies that make accessories for its products before releasing a big update that makes those accessories incompatible with those products, but... yeah. Boy the world is stupid place sometimes.

Anyway, moving on. Now that the bigboom fic is finished, I get to do a couple memes! Oh memes, how I missed you!

Name the five sweetest fictional characters.

Some folks that make me go 'd'awww.' Also, a spoiler for Lost. )

And an audience-participation meme:

Choose one of my stories and I will do a commentary on it.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] fadeintodawn and I are going to see The Swell Season tomorrow night! For those who don't know, that's the band in the movie Once. I'm pretty jazzed about it. Should be a good time. And it'll be my first concert since Virgin Fest back in, like, 2006. I've never even been to a concert with just one band before (or I guess two if there's an opening act), unless you count the time I saw Governor Martin O'Malley perform with his band back when he was mayor of Baltimore. I don't think that counts when you don't even know the performer is going to be there.

Mmkay, well, I've more or less installed myself in my aunt's house now. We've worked out what my rent will be, which oddly enough makes me feel so much better than living here for free. I'm not good with sustained charity. I've been doing some very grown-up paperwork for some stuff- not fun, but necessary. Yesterday, I got a mysterious letter from the IRS saying I'm qualified for some weird credit, followed by a check for over three hundred dollars. If it turns out to be a scam, hopefully they'll just take the money back and that'll be that. Until that happens, whooo free money!

I'd like to write some, but I haven't quite worked up the motivation. Maybe after dinner. In the meantime, a silly meme from [livejournal.com profile] zombres:

Pick a fandom and I will tell you who:

1. I would bake cupcakes for:
2. trust with the keys to my car:
3. put thumbtacks on their chair:
4. have a crush on:
5. pack up and leave if they moved next door:
6. vote for President:
7. pick as my partner in a buddy movie:
8. pair up:
9. vote off the island and into the volcano:
10. wheedle into fixing my MP3 player:

Anything in my tags is fair game, though some more than others.

ETA: Silly me! I almost forgot, [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket and I went on a little excursion the other day, and a helpful bartender made us some Sonic Screwdrivers. And I have a picture!

I watched Doctor Who's "The Eleventh Hour" too! If anybody in the world isn't completely sick of reaction posts by now, please enjoy mine. I actually watched the episode twice, once for fun and again to record my thoughts. Because this is a big event- the first episode of a new Doctor- and I just had to get my scifi nerd on.

I'm watching about six very adorable deer eat corn out of the container my stepdad likes to put out in the backyard. He entertains dreams of hand-feeding them one day. All I can think is that those same deer are going to make a mess of the garden in a few weeks.

Anyway, I've gotten a good group of questions for my fifteen characters meme, so here are my answers. They come in the following categories: funny, interesting, and OW MY BRAIN.
