List your top ten (10) favorite characters from a single anime fandom (whoops, didn't read that quite closely enough), and answer the following questions.

(You know what? I'm gonna go with multiple fandoms. It's more fun that way.)
1 - The Middleman
2 - Mal Reynolds
3 - Elizabeth Burke
4 - Claude Rains
5 - Veronica Palmer
6 - Granny Weatherwax
7 - Michael Weston
8 - Olivia Dunham
9 - Amy Pond
10 - Sherlock Holmes

Some weird stuff under this cut, my friends. )

It's been ages since I did one of these... From [livejournal.com profile] fannish5:

Name your 5 favorite fictional marriages.

I tried to go for couples that were together before and during their respective canons. )

It was way easier to come up with my second list: my favorite heterosexual life partners. )

So begins the cooking/writing weekend. With me doing a [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 meme, instead of writing a fic or cooking dinner. Oops. Anyway, I've got another thing I'm looking forward to in the next couple days besides stew and cookies and hopefully some fics- USA is airing its feature-length film all about the backstory of Sam Axe from Burn Notice on Sunday! Bruce Campbell is starring in his own made-for-TV movie, and not one of those stinky scifi affairs I'm sure he's done a few of! I'm so happy for him. *tear*

Wow, I managed not to do a meme for over a month! Not that I was really trying not to- quite the opposite, actually, but still! Sometimes I get annoyed with myself, like I don't have anything to talk about, all I want to do is play silly lj games. But can I help it when they're so fun and interesting so often? No.

Anyway! From, most recently, [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket:

1.) Comment to this and I will give you 3 fictional characters.
2.) Decide of the 3 whom you would marry, do, and dump cliff.
3.) Post this meme to your journal with your answers.

Two for the price of one! I did this whole meme once a while ago, but it accidentally got deleted, so I half-way did it again later, but, well, it's really one of those memes that demand... I dunno, immediacy. It gets stale if you leave it alone and then you have to start all over. Anyway, for the third and final time, here's this, stolen aaages ago from [livejournal.com profile] hermione_vader:

1. Write down 20 of your favorite OTPs
2. Put your media player on shuffle. The number of the song corresponds to the number of the OTPs.
3. Quote a part of the song that you think has any similarity with the story of the couple.
4. Comment.

Some of them were so far off I had to try again. Some were so spot-on it was scary. )
lotus0kid: (Happy halloween from the party skull!)
Arrrgh this is starting to piss me off. Anybody remember a little bit ago me complaining about my stupid iPhone reading each file in my fanmix folders as a separate album, so I can't listen to, say, all of Modern Day Wooster or Lovenado, just one song at a time? I figured this was because the files were spread out into folders based on band/musician, so I went through and made folders for each album, got them all organized where they belong, and STILL on my phone's library there's a long line of albums with the same name and cover art and ONE track each. Except for My Love is Like a Spaceship actually, it worked for that more or less, but that's really more frustrating than encouraging because there's nothing at all different about that one than the others and GAH. My last idea is to make separate playlists out of all of them, but I really don't want to do that. Maybe I could make one big playlist of fanmixes, but then I'd never be able to shuffle just one album, should I wish to.

Anyway, I had more to talk about than just bemoaning my continuing disappointment in technology. While I was doing the thirty-day meme, I collected more memes! Oh yes! I'm still sitting on a couple big ones, but today's [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 caught my eye this morning:

Which 5 persons from any fandom would you place on a lonely island to get the most interesting reaction?

I decided my island would be populated by the most Machiavellian, corkscrew-brained, devious, manipulative, calculating, self-serving characters I could find- and a wild card. Slight spoilers for Dollhouse. )

I'm really getting into the Halloween spirit now. Quite unconsciously, after I finished re-reading Soon I Will Be Invincible, I started re-reading Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. While I don't really like the implication that cadaver research should be linked with Halloween and all that, I'll admit it's hard not to at least a little, especially considering I've got I Sell the Dead coming in from Netflix tomorrow. After that it's Trick 'r Treat (highly recommended by the Adams of A Damn Movie Podcast), Day of the Dead, Rosemary's Baby, The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror, and Dog Soldiers. That last one, if you haven't seen it, definitely do- it's awesome, British, and does a very cool thing with the "trapped in a house surrounded by [supernatural being(s)]" trope more often seen in zombie movies.

Also, in actual physical activity, tomorrow I'm going to attempt the blood clot and brain cupcakes I came across- was it last year? [livejournal.com profile] zombres, did you link to that? Anyway, I was going to try it this afternoon, but I was tired from work (another day at the equipment yard- wheee I need to take a shower), and had to run out twice for the ingredients, and by the time I was ready to get started, I was also really hungry and just not into it enough. So, tomorrow morning it shall be! I'm kind of nervous about it- I've never even made cupcakes before, let alone ones with strawberry filling and buttercream icing. Anyway, this will be mostly a trial run- the recipe only makes eight cupcakes, so if they suck, at least I won't feel too bad throwing them away. And if they rock, hopefully they won't take too long to make, so I can whip some more up for other things. Like certain rallies, or carousing-type events. (@#!$%#@$^, I just realized I forgot to get the little tube thing to squeeze out the icing! *groans* Well, I've already done one Walk of Shame [or at least Overeager Baker Who Doesn't Check Her Supplies List to Make Sure She Has Everything Even After the Scare with the Little Paper Cupcake Holders] to the grocery store, I can do another tomorrow. They better friggin' have it, though.)

Also also, on Sunday [livejournal.com profile] fadeintodawn and I will bundle up for an outdoor version of Titus Andronicus. The local Shakespeare company does their shows in the ruins of an old girls school up in the hills of the historical part of town that have been semi-restored. For this one scenes will take place all over the ruins, not just on the stage that's set up in one area. So, that'll be neat. I've never seen the entire play, just clips of the Julie Taymor film version. Actually, I always think it's a good idea to read the summary of a Shakespeare play before going to see it just so even if the dialogue loses you you still know what's going on, so I read the one for Titus and oh my god! Jeepers, Shakespeare! If you think Hamlet/Othello/Macbeth/King Lear are bloodbaths, you have clearly not taken a glimpse of Titus Andronicus. All those other plays are goddamn dainty compared to it! I'm honestly a little nervous in a way. I mean, I don't know how far they're going to take it. Some of the stuff that happens in Titus is.. not easy to watch for anyone. I can handle gore pretty well, at least with a TV screen between me and it, but that screen won't be there this time. And there's more than gore. Oh well, you know, I know they set the audience age limit at fifteen (as in, fifteen and up), so, I kind of think that indicates they won't be taking it really far.

1. Update on my love affair with Netflix, because I'm sure you care: I sent back Across the Universe yesterday and am waiting on Wristcutters: A Love Story (who told me about that one? I can't remember). Across the Universe was pretty good, though I would've appreciated a little more character development, instead of the movie basically just being a delivery system for covers of Beatles songs, well done or not. In any case, Jim Sturgess had a highly enjoyable Northern accent (I'm easy). I spent last night and this morning re-watching the first season of Better Off Ted- delightful, as always, and now I have Ted's voice stuck in my head (Veronica's too, oddly, they take turns), which has helped while I've been researching technical writing stuff.

2. Birthday shout-out for [livejournal.com profile] fadeintodawn! If I hadn't been lame and realized her birthday was coming up sooner, I probably would've bought her ticket for the performance of Much Ado About Nothing we went to on Sunday. In any case, despite nearly sweating our brains out in the 90+-degree weather, the play was fine, as Much Ado has the tendency to be. I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but it's really the one Shakespeare play I like purely on its own merit- for Beatrice and Benedick and their awesome snark, and Claudio and Hero's general adorability, and Dogberry's goofiness, and Don Pedro's coolness, etc. In any case, [livejournal.com profile] fadeintodawn, I failed on the live theater tickets, so you'll have to make do with movie tickets sometime soon, just let me know.

3. Totally looking forward to the Epic Heroes Season One Re-Watch tonight. Man, it has been so long since I've watched any episodes that weren't relevant to my OTP interests. Like, "not since they aired" long. I'm hoping it'll get me good and jazzed up for my bigboom fic again, as the fic meme has definitely (if pleasantly) broken my momentum on that. I'm actually well over halfway to the 10,000 word minimum, which is somewhat comforting. However, the real action hasn't even started yet, which is not comforting. Anywho, whatever, I've got time, it'll get done.

4. Stealing a neat looking meme from [livejournal.com profile] hermione_vader

Please to be giving many suggestions.

5. Though I really should be rationing my book intake, since all but one box of my library is in storage for the next two years (*sniffles*), I've been zipping right through The Truth, which is better than I remembered. I don't know why, but I really love that.. jeez, how can I put this? When a character who's a reporter, or a cop, or a private detective is really motivated to get to the bottom of whatever it is that's going on. That doggish determination to bring everything to light, sometimes for no more solid a reason than it's The Right Thing To Do or To Get The Story. I dunno, I guess I just find it romantic. And The Truth is great because you have William de Worde experiencing that for the very first time. Though I think Otto Chriek is my favorite- I know I'm enjoying a character when I find myself wanting to, or actually saying their lines out loud.

BONUS: Across the Universe got me thinking of my favorite Venn Diagram ever. )

I'm watching about six very adorable deer eat corn out of the container my stepdad likes to put out in the backyard. He entertains dreams of hand-feeding them one day. All I can think is that those same deer are going to make a mess of the garden in a few weeks.

Well, I managed to hang on to my fancy asst. editor job, just barely. I got through about sixty submissions in two days, with a handful more to go through by Saturday. Unsurprisingly, my muse is a little shellshocked. So, I'm thinking a meme or two might help.

Inspired by Doctor Who's "Turn Left:" Pick one of my stories and tell me a point in the tale that you'd change. Something tiny (e.g. "and then Peter got pizza instead of making grilled cheese") or big (e.g. "and then Claude agreed to the Devil's offer") and I'll tell you how that one difference would have altered the course of the entire story.

Give me a prompt for a five-sentence fic.

Also, White Collar, Dollhouse, and Better Off Ted- big thumbs up. Excellent television right there.

From [livejournal.com profile] rionaleonhart:

- Write a list of characters and number them.
- Input the number of characters into this random number generator as the maximum and generate two numbers.
- Ramble about how the corresponding pairing/partnership/general interaction would (or, indeed, wouldn't) work. Perhaps write a snippet/one-sentence fic for it if you're feeling brave.
- Repeat to your heart's content.

Well, work tomorrow. Ohhh boy. I made a batch of cookies today- I'm thinking if I bring some in during the week it might buff up my dingy first impression. I do make some pretty dang good cookies. They may not be fancy, but they're soft where they should be soft and crisp where they should be crisp and there's cinammon and milk chocolate chips in them, not that semi-sweet garbage. And I've never burned a single one. I've burned myself, but not one cookie.

In other news, I think I'm going to get the Middleman/Better Off Ted crossover done before I focus on the Shrek!Plaude. The former won't be nearly as long and involved, and there are still some plot issues that need working out with the latter. Plus, I came up with the best covername for Wendy ever. Although, I'm minorly terrified of trying to write dialogue for.. pretty much everyone. Both shows have excellent writers that come up with some seriously clever, funny stuff. Ah well, maybe I'll get lucky.

In the meantime, I think, until the Rifftrax live event on Thursday, I'm going to have an unofficial MST3K marathon (BTW, if I ever get to ask Javier Grillo-Marxuach, creator of The Middleman, anything, it'll be if O2STK is a reference to MST3K. It has to be, right?). I'll watch an episode a night, which might also have the bonus effect of cheering me up for work. Last night I watched The Touch of Satan ("Did a plucked turkey in a wig just talk to me?"). Tonight... I'm thinking The Screaming Skull ("You know, the Gospel speaks of losers like you.").

Rifftrax Live: Plan 9 from Outer Space!
It will be seen. This is a thing that will happen. Anybody wanna come along? I know the overlap between my MSTie (from which Rifftrax has its origins), online, and local friends is small, but still, and if any of the as yet uninitiated are curious...

And now that the exchange fic is well and truly done (not well, but done), I can turn my attention to other things. To that end, it's almost suspiciously convenient that I stumbled upon this meme:

The "You Should Write..." Meme!
my thread here

a. One of the Watchmen ideas I've been toying with. All one-shots, except for something on the kink meme that I'll probably chicken out of writing anyway. It's just too awesome an idea for a n00b like me to tackle.
b. The Middleman/Better Off Ted crossover in which MM and Wendy visit Veridian to make sure they're not getting up to any too much mischief.
c. The fic that will be, ah, Plaude to the tune of Shrek. Multi-chapter, completely AU, hopefully amusing if on the black comedy side of things. Yeah, I wasn't kidding, [livejournal.com profile] c_quinn. I really want to write it.
d. Finishing that damn [livejournal.com profile] heroes15 table. Two more words, dangit, two!
e. Something else, to be specified on the thread.
lotus0kid: (kinda cool)
Sooo, I've got the complete series of The Middleman sitting next to me, and I just finished watching the Comic Con table read of the final latest episode. Yup, order me up another grin-ectomy. I'm gonna need it. Inna godda da vida!

In other news, temp work is hopefully a go, soon. It's funny, I was reading one of the contracts you have to sign, and, I dunno, it was kind of cool. I felt like I was some kind of admin mercenary being sent out to companies in need of my services. I'm a dork. But a happier dork than I was yesterday.

I'm also a meme sheep! Snatched most recently from [livejournal.com profile] visiblemarket:

List the first ten series that come to mind. Your friends will comment with the character from each series that they think you are most like.

1. The Middleman
2. Firefly
3. Heroes
4. Better Off Ted
5. Reaper
6. Doctor Who
7. Discworld
8. Pushing Daisies
9. Psych
10. (Oh, I'm asking for it, but) Watchmen
lotus0kid: (Default)
All righty then, I'm bored, not hungry enough to go heat up some lunch, not motivated enough to search out some more jobs, and I've finished my mandated vaccuuming for the day. So, it's meme time.

Give me a character from any fandom you know I know and I will tell you:
a. My favorite thing about that character.
b. My least favorite thing about that character.
c. One person I would ship them with in their own verse.
d. One crossover ship for them I think would be neat.
e. One crossover universe for them I think would be even neater.
f. Their ship from hell.
g. Their song.
h. The title of their biography or autobiography.
i. The last bad dream they had.
j. How they're gonna shuffle off the mortal coil, if they haven't already.

Okay. I'm going to go have lunch because it's time, probably watch Milk again, take the movies back, come up with something insightful to say about the awesome fics that have been posted (no promises, guys), and possibly apply for more jobs. When I get back, I'd like to have some characters to analyze. My tags on the right are a good indication of who you've got to choose from.
